Did you know that almost 40 percent of car trips are under two miles? And if every person living this close to their workplace ditched their cars on Bike to Work Day alone, more than 60,000 vehicles would be off the road, reducing tailpipe emissions by more than 150,000 pounds?

As part of Symantec's Mountain View Green Team for the last three years, I have had the pleasure of taking part in various activities that support Symantec's broader sustainability efforts. My personal favorite and biggest passion is our annual Bike to Work Day. Every year Symantec sponsors and participates in Bike to Work Day, organized by Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. We are proud to be a part of this national and Silicon Valley community event featuring thousands of cyclers...

By Vicente Lima, Country Director for Symantec Brazil

I’m really pleased to announce that Symantec Brasil has been recognized in two of the most important HR rankings from our country: last week we were selected for the fourth time as one of the 100 Top Companies to Work For - IT and Telco Industry, and, for the third time, as one of the 130 Top Companies to Work for in Brazil!

Both rankings are organized and promoted by the Great Place to Work Institute in partnership with national media outlets. The IT and Telco ranking will be featured in the next edition of Computerworld Magazine, while the national ranking is published by Época Magazine – one of the most important weekly publications in Brazil, with more than 1 million readers.

The main criteria for these awards are our employees’ opinion about the company. Employees were invited to evaluate Symantec in aspects such as credibility,...

From time to time, we use this space to highlight some of our favorite blogs and articles dealing with CSR topics – particularly those that highlight issues material to Symantec’s business. Here are some things that have recently caught my eye:

Making it Personal: Engaging Employees for Sustainable Success

This Sustainable Brands article caught my eye because, at Symantec, buy-in from our employees is critical to the success of our corporate responsibility strategy. But we want that engagement to be authentic and to resonate with employees in a personal and tangible way, not just be one more thing they have to check off on their to-do list.

This post was written by Rebecca Ranninger, Symantec Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, and President of the Symantec Foundation.

Although FY12 was another economically challenging year for many people, Symantec employees continued to donate both time and money to their communities. Employee volunteer hours increased by 20 percent over FY11 for a total of 18,379 volunteer hours. Additionally, during the same time frame, employee cash giving rose 14.4 percent to $791,714. Symantec added nearly $694,000 to this in company matched funds through our Dollars for Doers program.

At Symantec we are sure of one thing. Our employees want to give back and they find value in it. We all want to be part of a company that upholds the same values as we do. If we demonstrate and support this, it's a win-win for all...

We use this space to highlight corporate responsibility news, opinions, and insights from stakeholders both internal and external to Symantec. In an effort to include an even broader array of viewpoints, we're launching a new feature of the CR in Action blog. From time to time we will highlight recent articles from our favorite CR blogs and media sources.

Part of the mission of our CR in Action blog is to educate our readers on the issues that are central to Symantec's CR program – cybersecurity, environmental stewardship and climate change, diversity, human rights and employee development.  We couldn't think of a better way than sharing up to date news and information from some of our favorite sources.

We work to make an impact – Marc Gunther

Here, Marc is highlighting a recent Net Impact report, What Workers Want in 2012...

For four consecutive years, Symantec has been included in two of the world's top sustainability indices – the Dow Jones Sustainability Index – DJSI (Global and North America) and the FTSE4Good. These indices feature companies across the world and North America that are leaders in managing environmental, social and governance issues.

Additionally, for the past two years, we've been selected for the Maplecroft Climate Innovation Index (CII) Leaders, which includes the top 100 performers of the Maplecroft CII. The CII is the single most exhaustive study of how the United States' top companies are managing and adapting to climate change, one of the most pressing issues for businesses today. The index rates companies against more...

Rapid advancements in technology are changing the way companies gather and share knowledge, and most importantly the efficiency with which new ideas are discovered and brought to market. Crowdsourcing, open innovation and social enterprise technology are just some of the platforms allowing companies to tap into a new and diverse pool of ideas, leverage best practices, and create deeper relationships with their employees and customers.

This is very exciting, particularly in the sustainability space. Companies today face a tough challenge – to use fewer resources while continuing to grow their business. For example, Unilever is looking to double its size, while reducing its environmental impact. Microsoft has...

This just out: the latest causes companies support. As a socially conscious professional, you care, but you have to focus on business objectives. You need to meet the bottom line for your company and your department. Yet let's not overlook how CSR can play into your bottom line. Your CSR department is critical, and at the same time, to be at its highest point of efficacy, must also be conjoined with how your business units operate.

First, let's review some of the top findings across the world. Please note the difference between the U.S. and other countries' perspectives. While the environment and healthcare top the global list, the concern in the U.S. differs a bit. Please also note Brazil's growing influence in CSR and our industry.

This study found that protecting the environment (91%) and improving the quality of healthcare (89%) are the top two global concerns. In the U.S., it's poverty and healthcare. Significant...

Symantec has been named to CR Magazine’s list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens for the fourth year in a row. This year, Symantec was ranked number 85, up from 89 in 2011.

As a company, we’re proud of this accomplishment for several reasons. First, being included on these kinds of lists is a strong validation that we’re on the correct path and focused on the correct issues. Second, since this list is assembled from publicly available information, it’s an indicator that we’re communicating our efforts effectively. And third, recognitions like this can be a competitive differentiator when it comes to recruiting talented people who care about the same issues as Symantec.

For me personally, this recognition is meaningful because it demonstrates that each of Symantec’s 22,000 employees worldwide is making a difference. The seemingly small...

A recent Symantec study calculates the cost of cybercrime at $388 billion annually – more than the global black market in marijuana, cocaine, and heroin combined. Every second, 14 adults become a victim of cybercrime. Yet, there remains a lack of cybercrime information for judges, law enforcement, and prosecutorial staff – the very people charged with assisting and obtaining justice for victims.

The Norton Cybersecurity Institute (NCI) was created to address this education gap. NCI is a coalition of nonprofit partners designed to identify and eliminate cybercrime; facilitate training and collaboration between private industry, law enforcement, and academia; and raise consumer awareness about cybercrime and provide victim education. In early April, we sponsored the first-ever moot court...
