A few weeks ago, the CR in Action blog featured an article on Symantec’s sponsorship of the Dare2BDigital conference. Symantec has sponsored and partnered in the Dare2BDigital conference for four consecutive years, but this year for the first time, Symantec also hosted a student workshop, "Catch the Phish and Digital Drama." Marian Merritt, Director, Cyber Education & Online Safety Programs, developed the workshop materials. I led the sessions, together with twelve other Symantec volunteers.

Earlier this week, we heard about Safer Internet Day from Anne Collier of NetFamilyNews.org. Today, Marian Merritt, Symantec's Director of Cyber Education and Online Safety Programs, shares online safety insights from college students around the country.

Originally a European initiative, this year the recognition of February 11, 2014 as Safer Internet Day (SID) is a global campaign. The theme we are celebrating is, “Let’s create a better internet together.”

This theme got me thinking about the many ways having the Internet helps us. We research, we share our experiences, we find maps and directions, we plan trips – all of this is great. Yet, the technology network that connects us as individuals enables us to experience a...

Over the past few weeks, in honor of October's National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we’ve highlighted Symantec's cybersecurity and online safety initiatives designed to achieve our mission of protecting and managing information so everyone is free to focus on achieving their goals. While our products and know-how are invaluable tools in the effort to protect and educate our communities, we could not achieve this without our international partners. These partners located across the globe provide the vital programs, infrastructure and local know-how necessary to tackle our most pressing issues.

Today I am happy to highlight our progress with some of our global partners in online safety and cyber security education:

World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS): Our youth are one of the...

Last weekend I had the pleasure of participating in the Net Impact conference, the leading forum for next generation leaders who want to use their careers for good. The conference attracted approximately 3,000 attendees who ranged from students to C-suite executives driving sustainability at Fortune 500 companies. We met for three days of stimulating speeches, workshops and networking. I moderated a lively panel discussion on the topic of staying safe online and corporate responsibility in the age of social media with panelists including Symantec’s Marian Merritt, our Norton Internet Safety Advocate; Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance; and Henk Campher, senior vice president, Business & Social Purpose and managing director, Sustainability at Edelman. Keeping people’s information safe online is at the core of Symantec’s business and a...

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and Symantec is publishing a series of posts on how we're meeting Our Shared Responsibility to secure the Internet. Today we hear from Norton Internet Safety Advocate Marian Merritt, on best practices for your children's use of mobile technology.

My friend’s two year old woke up today and bellowed from her crib, “I want my iPad!” Even within your family, you may find your youngest child started using technology with far greater ease than your oldest child. Some of this can be attributed to the popularity and ease of use for touchscreen devices and smartphones. And your children, like you, are spending more and...

A Huffington Post article I read back in late July asked a poignant question: “Why no Internet safety course for kids and parents?” The author of the article was Tony Loftis, president and executive director of Find Your Missing Child, an organization that aims to use social media to locate missing and runaway children. Loftis equated the lack of Internet safety training to handing car keys to a 16-year-old with almost no driving experience, and it is an apt comparison.

Symantec’s FY13 Corporate Responsibility Report released last week shows that 26 percent of Symantec’s FY13...

Recent events have consistently demonstrated that cyber crimes present some of the most important and challenging issues our attorneys and legal system will have to confront now and in the future. For example, every second, 18 adults become a victim of cybercrime – that’s more than one and a half million cybercrime victims each day globally.

This spring, I was thrilled to be a part of the UCLA Moot Court Cyber Crimes Competition – the first-ever national moot court competition devoted to cyber crime issues. Held on March 15th and 16th by the Moot Court Honors Program at UCLA School of Law, the competition was created to complement and enhance UCLA’s role in training the next generation of cyber crime experts.
