Last month London’s The Copper Box Arena at the Olympic Park transformed into a city of science and technology exploration for students. TeenTech organizes events across England and Ireland to inspire tomorrow’s innovators by bringing to life the variety of opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Five hundred students from forty-two schools across London spent the day immersed in hands-on activities. Two hundred professionals, including a team of Symantec volunteers, shared real life challenges and experiences of STEM careers. It was an opportunity to bring the students’ curriculum to life but also to introduce career paths that they may not have known even existed. Students could design their own mobile apps, interact with Watson, IBM’s artificially intelligent computer, or see 3D mapping technology in action.

Every year on MLK Day, Americans across the country come together to serve their neighbors and communities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of service to humankind. Today, we celebrate all of you, the acts of community service you perform, and the diverse viewpoints and perspectives you bring to our business.

“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve.”

So said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Baptist minister and social activist who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. Every year on Martin Luther King, Jr.(MLK)  Day, Americans from across the country come together to serve their neighbors and communities in recognition of his legacy of service.

The MLK Day of Service, a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to...

From Dublin to Dubai, California to Cape Town, Symantec employees around the globe came together to celebrate the holiday season by giving back to their local communities. Food drives, toy collections, fundraising events and volunteer activities brought employees together to celebrate while making a difference for those less privileged.

Throughout the year, Symantec's community relations committees work closely with the Corporate Responsibility team to identify local nonprofits working in Symantec's philanthropic focus areas: science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education; online safety; diversity; and environmental responsibility. For Symantec, being a responsible, contributing part of society means applying its assets --money, talent and time -- to those issues that are material to Symantec's business.

But during the holiday season,...

Each quarter, we provide our internal and external stakeholders with a "snapshot" of our Corporate Responsibility activity here at Symantec. We try to balance the newsletter content among our areas of focus: Our People, Your Information, and The World. These pillars allow us to share information on our practices around talent management, diversity and inclusion, and employee satisfaction (Our People); information protection and privacy, cybercrime, online safety, and our signature Symantec Cyber Career Connection (Your Information); and our environmental performance, human...

When we first embarked on our corporate responsibility journey here in Sweden, we were looking to develop a true sustainability plan, from beginning to end, but also wanted to uncover opportunities that would make business sense. We decided that the family sector would be a great area for us to engage with, especially considering Symantec’s position on online safety. We established a partnership with Friends, a well-known non-profit in Sweden dedicated to the prevention and education of bullying. The organization travels all over Sweden to classrooms and sports clubs teaching students, teachers, and parents how to prevent and deal with bullying.

As the information security leader, Symantec’s mission is to make the online world a safer place. The increasing connected world has opened up new risks and challenges and our business’ goal is to help our customers manage and protect their information....

From climate change to cyber security to employee diversity, corporate responsibility (CR) and sustainability touches every aspect of Symantec’s business. We’ve defined our strategy and are continually working towards our goals to operate as a responsible global citizen. In addition to our dedicated global corporate responsibility team, every day Symantec employees across the world are helping us deliver on this, creating value for both our business and our stakeholders.

We are happy to introduce an ongoing feature of the CR in Action blog – the Sustainability Spotlight - that will profile employees and their contribution to Symantec’s CR and sustainability efforts. Some are members of our CR team, others contribute through our Green Teams or volunteering,...

I was happy to have the opportunity recently to speak with Arti Sharma, Corporate Responsibilty Associate at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, about Symantec's Software Donation Program and philanthropy in general. Below is her blog, part of the How Tech Gives series on the Philanthropy Front and Center - San Francisco site.

While nonprofits are directly tackling social issues, the barriers to positive social change can be significant. Many corporations have found donating resources to be a strategic way to efficiently and effectively support more people in need. Product donation programs are not just available through technology companies; companies like Home Depot and Tide also...

It's time to move beyond diversity as a feel-good talking point and bring about actual results.

The concept of diversity as a driver of innovation and healthy company culture has been around for a long time. To a large extent, companies have embraced the concept of diversity and inclusion, but there is still a lot of work to be done around integrating a commitment to diversity and inclusion into company culture in ways that result in more engaged employees, improved decision making, and healthier bottom lines. We talk a good talk – but how can we begin to see actual results?

I believe the answer lies in the relationship between diversity and corporate responsibility. Diversity and inclusion has been considered solely an HR issue for many years, and I think we haven’t seen the kind of results we’d like to see. If we begin to look at diversity as a CSR issue, and use the same framework that we use to drive other...

Symantec strives to create a positive impact both on a global and local scale through volunteering initiatives, grants, software donations, and by supporting employees in their personal volunteer and monetary contributions. With these tools in hand, Symantec teams all over the world support their communities in a variety of ways, and here in South Africa, our team has partnered with a local charity that does excellent work within our community.

Five years ago, the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched Mandela Day to commemorate the leader’s legendary impact and also as a call to action for others. Mandela Day, which is on July 18th – Nelson Mandela’s birthday – is considered a day to honor his legacy by volunteering and contributing to the community. Here in South Africa, our office gets involved in some...
