Entering the second week in Peru, the Symantec Service Corps (SSC) team has settled into their business projects as well as their home for the month, Hotel Casa Di Me Abuela, which translates to "My Grandmother's House."

While each morning the 10 team members head out to three different locations, they return at the end of the day and sit in the garden outside of their hotel, debriefing on what they learned and establishing a plan for the next day. We're keeping in close contact with them through their blogs, and are compiling weekly updates on their progress. Here's an update from Week Two!

What a whirlwind for the Symantec Service Corps (SSC). The 10-person team started their journey in October with the initial application process. After being accepted into the program in November, they participated in weekly training sessions and invested countless hours of preparation, and now they are officially on the ground in Arequipa, Peru, hard at work.

To kick things off, the team participated in an orientation session on Saturday, February 15, followed by dinner with Pyxera Global, the non-profit partner helping to facilitate SSC Peru 2014. As a group that arrived from seven different locations—Australia, Mountain View, India, the UK, Canada, Ireland and Springfield...

Some days it’s what I do outside of my “day job” at Symantec that reminds me why I am proud to be a part of this organization. As many of us who work for Symantec know, the company is not just about the financial bottom line. Symantec also strives to have a wider positive impact on our communities through the company’s philanthropic strategy that contributes primarily to four key focus areas - science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, and equal access to education, diversity, online safety, and environmental responsibility.

My manager, Tom Martin, leads a newly formed organization, created as part of the transformation to our new business strategy, which we call Symantec 4.0. As a leadership team, we wanted to signal to our new organization the value (both personal and professional) of supporting the company's key philanthropic focus areas, and to provide another proof point of the benefits of reaching out beyond our organization.

To do this, I...

As many of you may recall, we made a significant addition to our mission last year... adding corporate responsibility leadership to our overall goals because it's an integral part of our overall business success... it's about "doing well and doing good."

This week, we're making Symantec history by sending off the first employee team as part of our Symantec Service Corps.

The Corporate Responsibility team offered all employees the opportunity to apply to join the Service Corps in their inaugural mission to Arequipa, Peru. The team received an amazing 205 applications and from those, 10 employees were chosen to spend a month working with a non-profit organization or academic institution. Team members were chosen based on their applications, manager and HR business partner consultations, and alignment with non-profit...

Earlier this week, we heard about Safer Internet Day from Anne Collier of NetFamilyNews.org. Today, Marian Merritt, Symantec's Director of Cyber Education and Online Safety Programs, shares online safety insights from college students around the country.

Originally a European initiative, this year the recognition of February 11, 2014 as Safer Internet Day (SID) is a global campaign. The theme we are celebrating is, “Let’s create a better internet together.”

This theme got me thinking about the many ways having the Internet helps us. We research, we share our experiences, we find maps and directions, we plan trips – all of this is great. Yet, the technology network that connects us as individuals enables us to experience a...

Today is the launch of Safer Internet Day, an annual awareness campaign promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. As we saw at CES this year, the "Internet of Things" is here to stay. With more and more platforms, social networks and search engines monitoring our actions and mining our data, questions around how we manage the ownership and distribution of this data are rising. We only have to look at the targeted ads in our Facebook feed or even consider Google's recent purchase of Nest, a home hardware tech startup, to see that personal data is already a hot commodity. So how do we deal with the challenge of data privacy? And not just the current threats that are out there, how do we prepare for the data breaches we can't even fathom yet? When we look at the rapidly changing world of data privacy and compare that to the skills gap that currently exists with...

As Symantec continues to pursue our vision and looks to lead the way in developing technology for tomorrow, expanding the pool of talent and insuring diversity of perspective is critical to our success. Today, I’m honored to announce that I will serve as champion of Symantec’s Women’s Initiative, a program focused on attracting, engaging, and developing women at Symantec so that we can be more competitive and produce superior business outcomes.

Changing the perception of women in technology

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, “women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy; yet hold less than 25 percent of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs.” While this statistic is U.S.-based, the fact is around the world women are underrepresented in the field of technology. Even more concerning, the enrollment of women in the field of computer science is declining.

Computer science and...

In one month, I take off for Peru where I have the chance to join the inaugural Symantec Service Corps on a four-week assignment to support a skills-based project with a local organization.  I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity, and excited and curious about what this experience will bring. I will be immersed in the local culture, meeting new colleagues, and applying the skills I have developed at Symantec to support vital programs in the local community.

I have no doubt it will be an incredible and unforgettable experience.

As part of the team developing the Service Corps program, I’d like to provide a bit of background on the program for those who might not be familiar with it, as well as details on the organizations our teams will be working with.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Today – January 20, 2014 – is the MLK Day of Service, a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It asks Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. It’s the only US federal holiday observed as a national day of service.

Dr. Martin Luther King was also, of course, a prominent leader in the U.S. African-American civil rights movement, and originally the holiday was instituted in 1983 – after a long struggle – to commemorate his contributions to this movement.

As the executive champion for Symantec’s Black...
