In October 2014, Symantec released its FY14 Corporate Responsibility (CR) Report reflecting our deep commitment to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, reducing our environmental impact, and investing in positive social impact around the globe. Over the next month, we will share a few CR program highlights. Today we take a look at our signature program, the Symantec Cybersecurity Career Connection (SC3).

If you speak with hiring managers at many mid-to-large sized organizations, they will tell you that cybersecurity jobs are some of the most difficult positions to fill. According to a recent cybersecurity report it is estimated that in 2014 there were one million unfilled cybersecurity jobs globally. 1 And the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the information security analyst field to grow by 37 percent by 2022, which is much faster than...

With the advent of the internet, bullying has taken on a new, more invasive form. Cyberbullying, in which a young person uses technology to intentionally intimidate or embarrass another person or group, is a worldwide issue. In a global survey polling 18,000 people in 24 countries, 77% stated that cyberbullying is a unique form of harassment and needs special attention. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can happen anywhere and can be anonymous, making it difficult to control.

In that same survey, Australia ranked as the worst place for cyberbullying, with 9 out of 10 parents reporting that their child or another member in their community had been a victim of cyberbullying.

As an organization, Symantec’s Corporate Responsibility initiatives have captured attention for our commitment and impressive work in our global communities and it is rewarding to be part of an organization that prides itself in its commitment beyond business objectives. While our work on the global stage is a massive achievement, we also do really wonderful work here in the EMEA region – and that is what we want to bring attention to today.

On October 23rd the Old Basing Royal British Legion Corps of Drums, an iconic marching band, drummed through the Symantec buildings for the opening of the EMEA CR Awareness event. It was a celebratory event where we brought together our Corporate Responsibility...

My leadership team and I are committed to making Symantec a company that gives employees challenging and interesting work, invests in their growth, and provides them with opportunities to build long-term careers. One way we can do this is through our work in Corporate Responsibility (CR) -- an effort that not only impacts the world in which we live, but has been proven to help employee morale, enhance the brand, help attract top tier talent, and deepen the connection with our customers. I see our Corporate Responsibility program as an investment in our employees, building a diverse and inclusive workplace, reducing our environmental impact, and supporting philanthropic projects around the globe.

I’ve heard countless stories from employees about how we’re weaving our passion for corporate responsibility into the fabric of Symantec. From reading Postcards from Peru, where our employees shared their experiences...

We can all agree that children need to be taught best practices on how to use the Internet and technology. There are many common pitfalls, and we want children to learn how to steer clear of those problems. Just as important, we want them to be kind and respectful in their online interactions, to guard their privacy and their reputation, and learn to be good digital citizens. Too often, the responsibility for this education falls in the hands of parents, who may not have the background or information to handle this effort. Some schools have added lessons and assemblies about online safety and digital citizenship into their curriculum, but still many others have not.

Symantec employees believe that our school-age children deserve to be taught these lessons and that they should be designed in a way that is appropriate for their age and their maturity level. To assist in...
