As many of you know, opening the doors for women to thrive in STEM education and careers is a key focus for Symantec. Our work in this area is driven primarily through initiatives and partnerships managed by our Corporate Responsibility team, and supported by the volunteer efforts of thousands of employees worldwide. Our initiatives target females at all life and career stages as the challenge of increasing the number of female STEM professionals requires educating and supporting females at many points along their career development path from early education to professional career development.

As part of the Global Diversity and Inclusion team, I am involved in many of these initiatives and have the opportunity to see first-hand what a...

When your mission is to protect the world’s information there shouldn’t be categories of content that don’t receive equal treatment. And more importantly, when your company’s values clearly state a policy of diversity and inclusion there is no excuse for offering products that don’t align with those goals.

With GLAAD’s help, Symantec recently made a significant change to its web filtering software by eliminating the “sexual orientation” category. Symantec’s web content database is one of the largest of its kind, and maps the web across more than 100 categories and in dozens of languages. This update, which is in the process of being implemented at the product level, will mean that LGBT-related web content will be evaluated, categorized, and treated the same as other news, political and entertainment content.

"Let us recognize charity for what it is at heart: a noble enterprise aimed at bettering the human condition. On this International Day, I call on people everywhere to act on the charitable impulse that resides in every human being -- to start giving and to keep on giving.

Whatever the case, such generosity and kindness, with no expectation of financial gain, can make profound differences in human well-being."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Message for the International Day of Charity, 5 September 2014

Last week the world celebrated the life of one of our most remembered philanthropic leaders, Mother Theresa. Designated by the United Nations as International Day of Charity, each year on September 5th, the anniversary of the passing of Mother Theresa, the UN asks the world to...

Who are we and what do we do:

Ruby’s Place is the first domestic violence shelter incorporated in the State of California and Alameda County in 1972. We serve women and children who are homeless due to domestic violence and human trafficking. Our purpose is to foster a wellness based and culturally responsive community providing emergency shelter and supportive services to women and children who experience domestic violence, human trafficking, and homelessness.

The mission and purpose has expanded throughout the years to become a shelter with comprehensive services to assist in the healing process and begin the journey to becoming independent and stable. Last year 83% of our clients came to our facility due to a violent crime and 17% due to non-violent homelessness. Out of the 245 unduplicated clients we served, 153 were children.

Ruby’s Place is...

Symantec Vision is our flagship conference to demonstrate thought leadership and accelerate sales through impactful experiences. The conference delivers face-to-face insights, information and experiences needed to secure and manage an information-driven organization. Vision takes place as a global, multi-day Vision flagship event in North America and as regional Vision Roadshows in several locations around the globe.

At Symantec, we strive to embed corporate responsibility throughout our business, and we see our corporate proprietary events as a great opportunity to walk the talk, and to put into practice our commitment to environmental and social sustainability. At Vision we integrated an event sustainability strategy that minimizes the event environmental footprint, positively contributes to social benefit, and delivers economic efficiencies.

Since 2002, Symantec has partnered with TechSoup Global to help us deliver on our mission— working toward a time when every nonprofit and NGO on the planet has the technology resources and knowledge it needs to operate at its full potential.

Today this partnership has brought crucial online security products to over 80K non-profits and public libraries’ systems, across 36 countries worldwide. Symantec has donated over 1.5 million product licenses and has saved nonprofits and public libraries over $154 million dollars.  In FY14 alone, Symantec donated $24M worth of product, reached over 24,000 organizations and saved organizations $21.5M in product costs (compared to them buying full retail value versions).

Over the past few months if you’ve visited a Symantec campus you may have noticed employees snapping photos with their morning coffees. What is going on you may ask? A coffee or selfie craze?!

It’s our “One Mug, One Planet” campaign, a Green Team campaign that asks employees to pledge to eliminate their use of paper cups, with the goal of meeting our corporate-wide goal to reduce paper cup usage by 15%, and to achieve 80% waste diversion at all of our audited sites.

At the start of the campaign we set a goal of 1,000 pledges signed across Symantec, and 10% of employees at sites that have opted in to join this campaign.

And we have nearly met our goal with 917 pledges to date!

Similar to Symantec's Volunteer of the Quarter initiative, which highlights and rewards employees who dedicate their time and talents to those in need, our University Relations Team hosts an Intern Volunteer Week Competition, July 19th through July 27th. Symantec strongly encourages employees to volunteer in their local communities, providing volunteer resources and opportunities. We believe that involved, engaged employees are happier and more satisfied, and that communities in which Symantec is located will be healthier and more vibrant because of our presence.

During Intern Volunteer Week, interns took on the challenge and volunteered over 100 hours...
