I took on the exciting challenge of leading Symantec’s global corporate responsibility (CR) and sustainability department eight years ago. Overseeing the CR efforts for a global company such as Symantec is  demanding yet very rewarding, and never more so than now. When Symantec’s CEO, Steve Bennett, introduced our new company strategy, Symantec 4.0, earlier this year, he announced a renewed commitment to CR and the desire to lead in three key areas: Our People, Your Information and The World. He reaffirmed what I’ve always believed: CR is at the heart of who we are as a company that strives to protect and manage information, working to ensure that...

For the past week, the United Nations Climate Change Conference has convened in Warsaw, bringing together delegates from over 190 countries hoping to move closer to a global agreement on GHG emissions reduction.

At Symantec, mitigating our impacts on climate change is central to our environmental strategy.

A key way we continue to reduce our impacts is through our focus on green building practices, specifically achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) facility certifications. Earlier this year, I wrote about our achievements in FY13 -- three new LEED certifications, including our first Platinum certification in Culver City, California. We now have...

Today—National  Philanthropy Day—and every day, we are so pleased to celebrate our relationship with Symantec.

“I am the first person in my family to be educated,” said Anita, a graduate of Room to Read’s Girls’ Education program. “I felt very proud when I was able to read some documents for my father recently and prevent us from being cheated by our neighbors. Perhaps this was the day when my father too realized the value of my education. He told my mother that he was proud of me.”

Anita had to fight for her parents’ blessing when completing secondary school and again when pursuing a university education.  Anita’s parents came close to forcing her to drop out of school in the 9th grade to prepare for marriage, but with the help of...

Based upon the principles of non-discrimination and equality of opportunity, which are at the core of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the CRPD seeks "to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities." The CRPD would not require any new costs or changes to existing law in order for the U.S. to comply with its provisions.

President George W. Bush's administration negotiated the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), an international treaty that calls for ADA-like protection for people around the world. President Obama signed the treaty in 2009.  Since then, disability advocates have encouraged Congress to ratify CRPD, a required step in the process of the U.S. being considered a supporter.

One hundred and thirty-eight countries have now ratified the treaty. Unfortunately, the United States is not among them.

Last Thursday, Symantec’s Vice President of Corporate Responsibility Cecily Joseph had the opportunity to join Fenton’s #CSRChat on Twitter for a live discussion on Symantec’s corporate responsibility strategy and program.

Hosted by Fenton’s Susan McPherson, award-nominated #CSRchats are bi-weekly Twitter conversations centered around important topics in corporate responsibility. Past #CSRChats have featured discussions around corporate philanthropy, crisis management and transparency, disaster relief, water sourcing, and environmental reporting.

We won’t lie, it was our first time in the driver’s seat...

Over the past few weeks, in honor of October's National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we’ve highlighted Symantec's cybersecurity and online safety initiatives designed to achieve our mission of protecting and managing information so everyone is free to focus on achieving their goals. While our products and know-how are invaluable tools in the effort to protect and educate our communities, we could not achieve this without our international partners. These partners located across the globe provide the vital programs, infrastructure and local know-how necessary to tackle our most pressing issues.

Today I am happy to highlight our progress with some of our global partners in online safety and cyber security education:

World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS): Our youth are one of the...

The conference attracted approximately 3,000 attendees who ranged from students to C-suite executives driving sustainability at Fortune 500 companies.
