We recently launched a redesign of our Symantec.com mobile website.

With the redesign, users can now enjoy a more consistent look and feel on the mobile site as on the desktop version of the site. The visual execution and user interface elements are more closely aligned from web to mobile thereby, providing a more familiar and recognizable experience for users from one form factor to the next.

Some of the main changes include:

  • the addition of a quiet site selector at the top of the site which matches our desktop design
  • the inclusion of a side-scrolling carousel for site-wide promotions
  • visual responses to taps/clicks
  • a minimized display of links which contains options to “show more/show less”
  • “jump to top” at the bottom of each page to minimize scrolling
  • increased leading for improved readability
  • larger targets for ease of access

2013It's a new year and with it comes new opportunities for design evolution on the web.

Looking forward, there are three trends I think we can expect to see more of this year.

1. Mobile no longer an after-thought.
There has been and will continue to be an increased and hyper-focus on mobile. There is still a lot of upside growth in the mobile web space to be had. Consequently, it can't be ignored and what we can expect to see is more inclusion and integration of mobile in website planning. There will be less of sites being thought of in silos based on desktop or mobile. Instead, there will be more of a holistic approach to web presences where desktop, smartphone, and tablet instances will be thought of collectively. Strategically placed seals indicating that a site is secure increase the perceived level of security on a site.

In a study on checkout usability, it was found that visual cues of security like the Norton Secured Seal help customers feel more confident in providing their credit card information online. The study found that positioning also mattered where seals placed next to credit card form fields on a payment page provided an uplift in the perceived level of security by customers.

Last week, we launched a cross-site navigation enhancement to the Symantec.com Enterprise site.

We’ve added links to each of our four main sites – i.e. Norton, Small & Medium Business, Enterprise, and Partners – across the top of the site thereby, creating a funnel effect readily exposing our site choices by default and enabling users to more easily navigate to the destination that best fits their needs.

We’ve also added a site identifier adjacent to the logo to help users better identify the site they are on i.e. Symantec | Enterprise. This, is in addition to bolding the link label of the site the user is on e.g. “Enterprise” in the site navigation bar at the top of the page.

Hope this helps to better cross-navigate our sites.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Leah Fergenson, Online Marketing Director, for Symantec.com. She was kind enough to take time away from her busy schedule to give us a high-level overview of some changes happening to Symantec.com. The Online Marketing Team has been working hard on redesigning the Enterprise site based on extensive user research, branding initiatives, and achieving company goals. Leah: Customers were having a hard time finding what they needed on Symantec.com. The navigation was too complex, and page designs were often over-engineered. Additionally, the site needed to reflect the overall company direction to separate the Symantec online experience into a collection of smaller, more targeted websites based on target audience. The way we communicate with each other is changing. I use social media like forums and Twitter to connect and learn from others. It seems that I am not alone. Over one billion people, that’s one out of every seven people in the world, are connecting via some form of social media.

As designers, we try to learn about people and their needs, design for them, and then refine the design. Along the way, we connect and engage with people through things like usability tests and focus groups. But people are describing their experiences in a much broader way including things like how they became aware of a product, purchased it, how they are configuring it and what they do when something goes wrong. We have the opportunity to engage people about every part of their experience.

Visual Design ScreenshotVisual designs can be presented in different ways, so it always a good idea to know who you will be speaking to. They can be shown with or without annotations depending on the audience. A business stakeholder is less likely to be interested in annotations, but a technical audience might be more interested in the details of the implementation which can serve as the basis for a style sheet.

In my presentation, I might start with the overall concept and how the visual treatments are being applied to unite elements of the page, draw attention to important content and features of the page, and most importantly, enhance the user interaction on your website. Phase one of our brand new website which we recently told you about has been launched, providing a new and improved Corporate and Enterprise user experience on Symantec.com worldwide.

The first phase of the rollout includes the new home page, products and solutions landing page, security response landing page, and global navigation.

The new Enterprise site provides a more engaging experience, more dynamic content (integrated social media, video, podcasts, etc), and a simplified display of information. There is a more prioritized global navigation, a better browsing experience with fewer clicks to key pages, and a more seamless user experience.

My wife and I are in the final few days of a kitchen remodel. As anyone who's ever lived through a remodel can attest to, it is a big undertaking that can really disrupt an otherwise normal home life. However, for a designer it can also be a time to get re-inspired by the creative process. 

As a designer, I took on the challenge of designing the kitchen myself. I knew there would be risks but I also knew that I could also create a space that matched our family's personality much better than anyone else could. 

Ok, I know what you are thinking, what does this have to do with the practice of design at Symantec. My answer is that it has everything to do with designing and delivering a product that meets the needs of your audience. I will address three key points that will explain what I mean.

The blog was officially launched on Symantec Connect on February 8th and is the next-generation of the original VeriSign Web User Experience Blog started three years ago.
