Overview:
The VeriSign Seal is an important offering for the company as well as a symbol of trust for many online. As we started to offer more ways customers could get the seal, it introduced some confusion. Customers can either buy the seal by itself or buy an SSL Certificate which includes the seal.

Problem:
The VeriSign Seal page has two main goals - one, to help customers understand the two options for getting the seal and what the differences are; and two, to help them install the seal. The modifications we made the the existing page did not seem to be addressing this clearly enough. The first call to action on the page was to install the seal which seemed to suggest you could simply install the seal without purchasing it. And, the second call to action was to buy SSL Certificates which seemed to be divergent from the subject of the page as it didn't provide enough context as to why it located there.

Internet Trust IndexThe Internet Trust Index has reported a modest level of trust amongst U.S. online adults of 61.5 on a scale of 100 - with zero representing no trust and 100 representing absolute trust in the Internet. This is interesting as getting a pulse on how users perceive the Internet could be valuable for a number of reasons. It provides some insight into what activities users are likely to engage in online, whom is most active online, and where demographically. From a design perspective, this can help guide decision-making with regards to driving feature sets, look and feel, and even communication design. jbidzos.jpgWe attended RSA 2010 this week where VeriSign was a Platinum Sponsor. Executive Chairman, Jim Bidzos, gave a Keynote Address on the 'Internet and Trust' explaining that without trust, people are less likely to freely share information or transact online.

This is very true in the creation of Websites. Good design is critical for good user experience which is essential to building trust. A Website is our face to the world and its design creates that first impression which people judge it by. Also, every interaction a user has on a site impacts the trustworthiness they associate with that site. So, poor design and rampant content errors, for instance, take away from the credibility and trustworthiness of sites. Imagine trying to purchase something on a Website and getting a message that the secure connection has failed and the site is using an invalid certificate. Would you think twice about proceeding or even abandon your purchase? Probably, yes. That is what happens when a site has an invalid SSL certificate. It may be that the cert has expired or just wasn't setup correctly.

And what does this do to the user experience on these sites? Well, not a lot of good. It doesn't instill much confidence in the user; not to mention, it can inhibit the user's ability to access your site altogether. It also presents a security threat as the user's information may be vulnerable and prone to hacking and phishing scams which can become a liability for the company. It can also result in downtime for the site. In the end, both the company and customer loses. So, to prevent this from happening to your site, keep those SSL certs current.

200159357-001.jpgIn a recent survey of 919 U.S. adults, 18 years and older who spend at least three non-work hours a week online, 85 percent of consumers state that trusting a site is most important to them when interacting with a Website and sharing confidential information. In contrast, nine percent deemed competitive pricing as most important and another five percent thought ease of use was most important. Additionally, a whopping 93 percent of respondents said they would stop transacting on a site that was not secure.

The survey findings also concluded that 76 percent of consumers claimed that identity theft is a "major" concern for them. When asked how they felt about brands that did not protect their online identity, 56 percent felt "distrustful," 17 percent...
