"Symantec™ IT Management Suite 7.5 HF4 powered by Altiris™ technology Release Notes" (http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7126)

If you have chosen to create your sites and subnets manually instead of importing them from AD, what is the easiest way to create filters that contain the computers associated with those sites?

The following query is one way of achieving this goal (another method would be to target the actual subnets contained in each site):

  SELECT ip._ResourceGuid
  FROM Inv_AeX_AC_TCPIP ip
  JOIN vSubnet sub ON sub.Subnet = ip.Subnet
  JOIN vSiteSubnetMap map ON map.SubnetGuid = sub.[Guid]
  JOIN vSite s ON s.[Guid] = map._ResourceGuid
WHERE s.Name = 'name of site'

There is a known issue with DS6.9 SP6 and WinPE4 which means that the PXE environment variables used in this article won't be set. To resolve this please take a look at  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH213143 and replace your startutl.bat batch file with the revised version in the tech note.

This is important for sites who use their DS6.9 PXE servers as image stores, and who therefore map a drive to  \\%ALTIRIS_PXE_IP%\images in Bootwiz to assist this process transparently across multiple PXE servers.

My google-fu failed to pick this tech note up and it took a fast response Altiris support ticket to track this one down. I've updated my "WAN Nirvana" article to reflect this.

The following query maps item names to the three different guids found within the ResourceAssociation table, allowing you to understand its contents better:

SELECT
vi1.[Guid] AS ResourceAssociatiopnTypeGuid,vi1.Name AS ResourceAssociatiopnType,
vi2.[Guid] AS ParentResourceGuid,vi2.Name AS ParentResource,
vi3.[Guid] AS ChildResourceGuid,vi3.Name AS ChildResource
FROM vItem vi1
JOIN ResourceAssociation ra ON ra.ResourceAssociationTypeGuid = vi1.[Guid]
JOIN vItem vi2 ON vi2.[Guid] = ra.ParentResourceGuid
JOIN vItem vi3 ON vi3.[Guid] = ra.ChildResourceGuid
ORDER BY vi1.Name ASC

Today marks the last day that my community status will display Symantec Employee.

I will endeavour to maintain a community presence; however, I do not know how frequent this will be.

This is an FYI for something we've seen in our environment.

We upgraded a Deployment Server from SP4 to SP6 and installed the Windows 8 AIK.

When we build our WinPE4 boot images, the compression stage of the WIM build brings the server to it's knees. This causes the axengine service to lose contact with the local instance of express database, resulting in an application fault.

So..be aware that if you create your images with compression that it's worth checking that you're express service is still running afterwards.

We’re loading up the RV and hitting the road with Symantec to talk about Altiris 7.5. And We’re Coming To A City Near You.

Okay, we’re not actually loading up an RV, but it sure would be fun if we could!  We’re so excited to be part of this big release. The Altiris experts from ITS will review the 7 and a half reasons everyone should consider upgrading to the Altiris 7.5 platform. We’ll provide an overview of the features and capabilities that are new to the 7.5 platform, as well as how those will enable better management of your IT environment. You’re probably asking yourself, what are we actually going to talk about? Here’s what we’ll be covering:

  • Cloud Enabled Management
  • Deployment Solution
  • Macintosh Management
  • Performance
  • Platform Support
  • Automation
  • ...

One unfortunate difference between SMP 7.1 and 7.5 is that in 7.1, when you run a report, the SMP records a number of "Altiris.Reporting....." entries in its logs; two of which were high useful:

Source: Altiris.Reporting.DataSource.ResourceDataSource.Run
Description: ResourceDataSource returned N rows in 'Table' table

N equates to the number of rows that you report displayed, making it easy to locate the write log records, because immediately below this line will be the actual reports SQL that was used:

Source: Altiris.Reporting.DataSource.ResourceDataSource.Run
Description: ResourceDataSource is running query:

<Reports SQL starts here>

Here is a handy SQL query that will allow you to search your database tables for a particular word or words (tested against SQL 2008 R2):

**********************************

CREATE TABLE myTable99 (TABLE_NAME sysname, COLUMN_NAME sysname, Occurs int)
GO

SET NOCOUNT ON

DECLARE @SQL varchar(8000), @TABLE_NAME sysname, @COLUMN_NAME sysname, @Sargable varchar(80), @Count int

SELECT @Sargable = 'enter word or words here'

DECLARE insaneCursor CURSOR FOR
    SELECT c.TABLE_NAME, c.COLUMN_NAME
      FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.Columns c INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.Tables t
        ON t.TABLE_SCHEMA = c.TABLE_SCHEMA AND t.TABLE_NAME = c.TABLE_NAME
     WHERE c.DATA_TYPE IN ('char','nchar','varchar','nvarchar','text','ntext')
       AND t.TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE'

OPEN insaneCursor...
