Part 3

In my previous couple of blog posts, I outlined a set of "control freak" scripts and processes we use in order to deploy our Windows 7 images using Deployment Solution v6.9. in this final part, I will be covering the actual hardware-independent scripting process we use for our deployments. This isn't some magical process, or a bunch of utilities cobbled together from Microsoft Embedded SDKs. This is a simple set of VBScripts that I wrote to make our deployments works.

In case you missed my first part (which I do recommend you go back to and read from there - http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/murrayw), I started trying to deploy "Windows 7" before Altiris actually supported it. We were at "DS v6.9 SP2" at the time, and I had no "Scripted OS Install" option or WIM support... so I had to come up with a...

More than ever before, smartphones are keeping us connected both personally and professionally. Because most of us have a preference as to the ideal smartphone, IT departments are increasingly being tasked with managing a mix of business-liable and employee-liable devices. This trend has become known as the consumerization of IT.

Symantec has developed a short survey to get smartphone end users’ perspectives on this trend. We’d also like to learn more about how your employer is managing the growing use of smartphones, especially those being purchased and brought into the organization by employees. The quick five minute survey can be found here: http://bit.ly/gsdgmX.

Once you’ve taken the survey, please stay tuned to this blog as we’ll be sharing the results once the survey is complete.

This is Part 2...

In this next part of my "Control Freak" approach to deploying "Windows 7", I thought I would cover off on the main sections of my deployment and start to provide you with my scripts that make it all work. So here goes: My deployment, when made generic for the purpose of this blog, can be as little as three tasks in a Deployment Server job. In my previous blog I described the process of generating the "Unattend.XML" file with variables and database lookups, and after that we have a disk image task, and then the stuff that follows to make it all work. In this blog entry I will concentrate on the third part. Now, I did describe the creation of the "Fix BCD" commands in the previous blog as well, but bare with me here as I run through that and the rest of the script processes.

Now, one unexpected gotcha I faced when writing these...

Sometimes, you just can't bare the thought of relinquishing control of your processes to automated actions. Some times, the control freak within gets the better of you. Often you end up with a much more reliable, well-documented, and tweakable solution - even if you did have to reinvent the wheel. And this is where this blog post comes in. You see, we've never been quick to apply the latest-and-greatest Deployment Solution service pack, but we do very much like our new technologies. So when it came time to deploy "Windows 7 Enterprise (64-Bit)" to our site, we were still only running "Deployment Solution v6.9 SP2". At this very early stage (as SP3 had only recently been released), I was left without the aide of a "Scripted OS Install" (SOI) process for "Windows 7", and instead needed to build all the processes and scripts that would allow us to deploy and manage the solution. The biggest surprise was how well it all worked. The second...
