If you have chosen to create your sites and subnets manually instead of importing them from AD, what is the easiest way to create filters that contain the computers associated with those sites?

The following query is one way of achieving this goal (another method would be to target the actual subnets contained in each site):

  SELECT ip._ResourceGuid
  FROM Inv_AeX_AC_TCPIP ip
  JOIN vSubnet sub ON sub.Subnet = ip.Subnet
  JOIN vSiteSubnetMap map ON map.SubnetGuid = sub.[Guid]
  JOIN vSite s ON s.[Guid] = map._ResourceGuid
WHERE s.Name = 'name of site'

If you don't like drilling down into the usage report, here is a SQL query that you can run to find usage data either for all files that have been metered or for a specifc file:

SELECT rf.Name AS [File],c.Name AS Computer,wu.UserId,
ms.[Month Year],ms.[Run Count],ms.[Last Start]
FROM vAMMonthlySummary ms
JOIN vComputer c ON ms._ResourceGuid = c.[Guid]
JOIN Inv_Global_Windows_Users wu ON ms.UserGuid = wu._ResourceGuid
JOIN RM_ResourceFile rf ON ms.FileResourceGuid = rf.[Guid]
--WHERE rf.Name LIKE '%part of filename%' --provides data for specific file
ORDER BY c.Name,wu.UserId ASC

The following query maps item names to the three different guids found within the ResourceAssociation table, allowing you to understand its contents better:

SELECT
vi1.[Guid] AS ResourceAssociatiopnTypeGuid,vi1.Name AS ResourceAssociatiopnType,
vi2.[Guid] AS ParentResourceGuid,vi2.Name AS ParentResource,
vi3.[Guid] AS ChildResourceGuid,vi3.Name AS ChildResource
FROM vItem vi1
JOIN ResourceAssociation ra ON ra.ResourceAssociationTypeGuid = vi1.[Guid]
JOIN vItem vi2 ON vi2.[Guid] = ra.ParentResourceGuid
JOIN vItem vi3 ON vi3.[Guid] = ra.ChildResourceGuid
ORDER BY vi1.Name ASC

The following query will display those computer assets that either do not have a department or an owner associated with them:

SELECT vc.Name AS Computer,vado.Department,vauo.[User Name] AS [Owner]
FROM vComputer vc
LEFT JOIN vAssetUserOwner vauo ON vc.[Guid] = vauo._AssetGuid
LEFT JOIN vAssetDepartmentOwner vado ON vc.[Guid] = vado._AssetGuid
WHERE vado.Department IS NULL
OR vauo.[User Name] IS NULL
ORDER BY vc.Name ASC

Today marks the last day that my community status will display Symantec Employee.

I will endeavour to maintain a community presence; however, I do not know how frequent this will be.

We’re loading up the RV and hitting the road with Symantec to talk about Altiris 7.5. And We’re Coming To A City Near You.

Okay, we’re not actually loading up an RV, but it sure would be fun if we could!  We’re so excited to be part of this big release. The Altiris experts from ITS will review the 7 and a half reasons everyone should consider upgrading to the Altiris 7.5 platform. We’ll provide an overview of the features and capabilities that are new to the 7.5 platform, as well as how those will enable better management of your IT environment. You’re probably asking yourself, what are we actually going to talk about? Here’s what we’ll be covering:

  • Cloud Enabled Management
  • Deployment Solution
  • Macintosh Management
  • Performance
  • Platform Support
  • Automation
  • ...

One unfortunate difference between SMP 7.1 and 7.5 is that in 7.1, when you run a report, the SMP records a number of "Altiris.Reporting....." entries in its logs; two of which were high useful:

Source: Altiris.Reporting.DataSource.ResourceDataSource.Run
Description: ResourceDataSource returned N rows in 'Table' table

N equates to the number of rows that you report displayed, making it easy to locate the write log records, because immediately below this line will be the actual reports SQL that was used:

Source: Altiris.Reporting.DataSource.ResourceDataSource.Run
Description: ResourceDataSource is running query:

I have just updated my article by adding a comment that includes the SQL behind the new view that ITMS 7.5 adds to "Manage > Software".

After a clean install of ITMS 7.1.2 MP1.1 v7RU, it was found that it was not possible to create a new CMDB rule as its first dropdown list failed to open.

To workaround this issue, you need to clone a sample CMDB rule and then modify it to suit your needs.
