It is essential to understand how the reports in the Patch Management Solution calculate compliance.  For example, the Compliance by Computer report calculates compliance based on all bulletins applicable to that computer.

If you download the applicability/detection rules for a particular bulletin and the Patch Management Solution finds that an update associated with that bulletin is applicable to a particular computer but not installed on that computer, that computer is considered to not be in compliance with respect to that bulletin.  This is true even if you have not created any policies to distribute the updates associated with the bulletin to that computer.

While the Patch Management Solution reports provide you with an "absolute" measure of compliance, there may be occasions in which you want to see another view of compliance.  For example, you may want to see the compliance status of a particular computer with...

In case you have missed the new download here on Symantec connect [1] I'm doubling up the announcement here on my blog:

It's been a very long while since I posted a download on Connect but tonight I've got something worth sharing.

This week I needed to work on implementing automated patching for one of my customer with Workflow and this lead me to consider writing something similar to the 6.2 [2] tool we had, but for 7.1.

And it turned out to be rather trivial, compared to the code we previously had to write.

This is because the Patch Workflow API contains everything needed to handle the staging of bulletins and creation of software update policies.

So, I'm attaching a single executable file (_warning_ this is still beta code) to this download.

And here's a brief description of the tool command line options:

File name: ZeroDayPatch.exe

File path: "<...

I was in Spain helping a customer migrate their 7.1 SP1 servers to 7.1 SP2 Rollup 4, and I encountered a strange issue that I am finding, today, on my test servers as well.

The issue, as the title indicates, relates to the Security Role Manager, and was found in one (the reporting server) for my customer. I still need to create a case and send it to our backline / engineering team, but wanted to reserve the primer to Connect.

Now, to be more precise here is how I found the issue on my server (it's slightly different from the customer server - but the root is the same):

  • Clone the Symantec Admin role
  • Open the Security Role Manager
  • Select the "Resources" view, here is what it looked like:

  • Click on the pen to limit the role view on the Resource tree:
