Since Deployment Solution 7.5, computers rebooted to Automation are renamed to their serial numbers rather than "MiniNTxxxx".

To retrieve the computer serial number, while in automation, type on the command prompt:

"wmic bios get serialnumber"

Then lookup the computer on the console under Manage > Computers.

Instead of adding a Search custom criteria, that should help to quickly identify the target machine for troubleshooting purpose.

I often find myself peeking into Altiris databases with the goal of finding a particular piece of information. The only problem is, I rarely know what table it's stored in.

There are three options at this point,

  1. Stare vacantly at the database, scanning through every table name waiting for an internal bell to tinkle
  2. Google till you dribble
  3. Run a SQL Query to find your table

In case you are an option (3) type of admin, this is the query to use,

SELECT *
FROM sys.tables
WHERE Name LIKE '%BIOS%'

SELECT *
FROM sys.views
WHERE Name like '%BIOS%'

Where here, in this instance, I'm looking for tables and views whose name includes the string "BIOS". This is a truely invaluable little query, and very helpful when trying to update reports across database versions. It's even quite handy if you simply are feeling a bit nosey.

Migration: A migration is when you install the latest version of the IT Management Suite solutions on a new server, and then migrate the data from the earlier ITMS solutions to the latest version of the application.

Upgrade: An upgrade is when you install the latest version of ITMS on the same hardware, server operating system, and database.

You must migrate the Notification Server 6.x or 7.0 data to either Notification Server 7.1 SP2 or Notification Server 7.5. After migrating the data, you must first upgrade to either ITMS 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 or ITMS 7.5 HF6 depending on the path you choose and then upgrade to ITMS 7.5 SP1.

The following diagram gives an overview of the migration and upgrade process:

After leaving support a couple of weeks ago to join a consulting firm called XCEND (shameless plug: www.xcendgroup.com), I've been pondering things I left behind and thought it might be useful to others to get a "glimpse" of how things work inside Support.  However, I think it'd better to simply tell you how to make things work better for you when you need to work with Symantec. (Note to self - that includes me now!)  I think looking at your experience with Symantec Support in 4 areas will be sufficient:

  • Preparing for your support experience
  • Your Relationship with your Support Rep
  • Remaining in control of your issues
  • Proceed with Caution

In all of the above, I will be using in a very biased way my own personal experiences from the inside looking out.  Everyone reading this knows what it looks like from the outside looking in, so this is intentionally a...

Hello all,

Today I ran into the above mentioned problem whilst trying to perform a clean install of ITMS 7.5, so I thought I would share what worked and what didn't.

Windows 2008 SP1 R2 with SQL 2012 SP1.

SQL was initially configured for Windows Authentication.  When SIM failed, I manually created the database to no avail.

I then changed to mixed authentication and changed the SA account (as I obviously didn't know what the original one was) via the UI.  Unfortuantely, the SA account had the same problem.

What worked was running the following query:

USE master
GO
ALTER LOGIN [sa] WITH PASSWORD=N'NewSAPassword', CHECK_POLICY = OFF
GO
ALTER LOGIN [sa] ENABLE
GO

This allowed SIM to create the database and begin the installation phase.  Once ITMS 7.5 was installed, and the 9 hotfixes (required a rebot beforehand), I opened the Database Settings page and switched to the AppId so that...
