Set Default Printer

I needed to find a way to set the default printer via a Deployment Console job. I have found a few different ways of doing it.

The first is a vbs script:

Set WSHNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
WSHNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "[PRINTER_NAME]"

The second can be used in the command prompt:

start /W RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /y /n "[Printer_Name]"

View Resource Association Diagram Directly from an Incident

We recently had a request that seemed to make way too much sense for us to have not done it already. 
A helpdesk worker wanted to be able to view everything associated to an asset (monitors, incidents, people, software licenses) quickly and easily. 

By creating a task we were able to make that happen right away. 

Once you've set whatever parameters you want to make it viewable just drop this line into the "Base URL" section.

http://<NSSERVERNAME>/Altiris/Resource/Explorer/ResourceAssociationDiagram.aspx?itemguid=WORKITEM(managed_object_resource_guid)

Quick and easy.

PC/Laptop Boot Time Optimization

Apart from Symantec products and processes, why can not we have ideas that can change the way we do things.

I have got an idea here that is going to save lot of time and money for our organization.

According to Microsoft the design goals for Windows XP on a typical consumer PC are:

  • Boot to a useable state in a total of 30 seconds
  • Resume from Hibernate (S4) in a total of 20 seconds
  • Resume from Standby (S3) in a total of 5 seconds

I work for an organization which has over 1000 employees. Most of the employees are complaining about the time that a laptop/desktop is taking to boot to Windows. We are also concerned on the same. We had a meeting today and discussed about the new and ongoing issues in our company that are affecting the business. One of our discussion topics is, how to bring down the bootime and how to increase the performance?

Altiris Beta Program: Data Connector 7 - Beta Now Available

The beta for Data Connector 7.0 is now available for download. As part of the 7.0 release, we have moved the Connector functionality into the Symantec Management Platform and it is no longer a standalone solution. The functionality will now be available to all solutions and customers.

Remote user logged into a host machine is not automatically disconnected after XX inactive time

You set up a host to disconnect the session if inactive after XX minutes, the remote connected to the host, and stay inactive for the XX minutes, but it's not getting disconnected as configured.

There is 2 main reasons behind that:

  1. The caller is a Superuser, and that's working by design. The Superuser will have a full permission.
  2. The mouse pointer is not stable.



Solution:

  • Change to a normal user
  • replace the mouse
