I have just started a new job in a new place with new people. We have a 16 blade HP server to migrate all services to in the neat future. As of now, multiple services are running on the same servers with no (nada, zip, zero) redundancy. They know it, and they have been trying to get it up but DIACAP has taken all their time. I will chronicle my trials and tribulations on my journey to migrate the Console services and images to a new blade.

Many times we interfere with the MSI script sequence in InstallExecute sequence, AdminExecuteSequence, advertised sequence, InstallUISequence, AdminUISequence. Following lists will be helpful in maintaining proper sequence.

It's not necessory that sequence number should be like this only but order is suggested to be the same.

We really don't like the balloon pop-ups in the taskbar in XP so we have been turning it off in the registry.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000000
"EnableBalloonNotificationsLocal"=dword:00000000
"EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote"=dword:00000000

Hello Connect!

I have decided to take on a personal challenge in an effort to teach and learn more about using the ASDK. I have been writing tools for work using ASDK1.4 for about 6 months and just started learning C#. Since then I've developed a few win apps that have saved a ton of time for both myself and coworkers using Altiris.

To celebrate the ASDK and to thank Symantec for giving us such an open and flexible tool for working with Altiris, I am going to write 30 tools using VBscript or C# in 30 days. I will blog about each tool and include short descriptions on the methods being used and the approaches I take to use them.

First a few acknowledgments. A big thank you goes to Screenbert! When I first set out to create an SWD package creator in the ASDK, it was his how-to videos that gave me the start. Without those guides, I probably would of found the learning curve...

 I ran across this funny site, http://hey-it.com/, that is all about trying to convince IT shops to get rid of IE6. That's great and all, because we would definitely love to. But, we have many applications that the vendor does not support a newer IE version, let alone another browser.

Is anybody else in this position where they can't get rid of IE6 yet?

(by the way Connect admins, it's hard to choose a 'product' check-box for creating a blog post about something like this that isn't strictly related to a Symantec product)

There is a tsunami brewing in Redmond this year that is bound to disrupt every systems management company in the market today. The tsunami began several years ago when Microsoft decided a 5 year OS release cycle was not feeding the profit machines fast enough and that two year cycles would be necessary to keep the coffers hopping. Windows Microsoft Windows Vista was the first iteration of the shortened OS release cycle. While consumers had little choice to move to Microsoft Windows Vista as they purchased new hardware, businesses still recovering from the tsunami that was the “Year 2000” bug continued running older hardware and were not able to refresh hardware to handle the new requirements of the OS. The Microsoft marketing engine made a solid push to cram Microsoft Windows Vista into corporations but in hindsight few moved. While Microsoft marketing continued to push the new OS, systems management companies like Symantec, Avocent/Landesk, IBM, and HP rushed products...

When working with our core image for Windows 7 I found that restoring an image that has not been syspreped results in a boot error. You can go through the windows repair and let it try to "fix" the issue. Or you can simply use bcdedit to "reset" to boot information. I never had this problem with Windows Vista Images, so it seems to be the new boot manager with Windows 7 that cause this issue. It's probably a good thing to keep unauthorized (and un-sysprepped) images off of your network.

1   ) Restore the Windows 7 image onto the computer
2   ) Boot with the latest version of your Altiris bootdisk.
3   ) Run these commands:
3a ) bcdedit /set {default} device partition=c:
3b ) bcdedit /set {default} osdevice partition=c:
3c ) bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device partition=c:

To install a MUI Language for XP we folow these steps:

1 ) Download the the MUI Pack with the language(s) you need.
2 ) Get the latest MUIsetup.exe from SP3 and replace the one included in the MUI pack download.
3 ) Execute it using this command line where "0416" is your language code, in this case Portugese.

muisetup.exe /i 0416 /d 0416 /r /s

4 ) Then we execute another command that changes Regional Settings for all users that log onto that machine again using the language code in the BR.TXT file.

rundll32.exeshell32,Control_RunDLL intl.cpl,,/F:"BR.TXT"

The BR.TXT file has the following information:
[RegionalSettings]
LanguageGroup = 1
UserLocale = 00000416
SystemLocale = 00000416
InputLocale = 0416:00000416
MUILanguage = 0416
UserLocale_DefaultUser = 00000416
InputLocale_DefaultUser = 0416:00000416
MUILanguage_DefaultUser =...
