Symantec Workflow 7's Ticketing Functionality and Reporting

Now with Workflow 7's ticketing and reporting functionality you can add status and reporting to your processes quickly and easily. I recently had to build a "Proof of Concept" (POC) for a client proposal that we are working on. The client wanted to generate reports using Workflow to track a process for auditing purposes. Now as many of you know, in past versions of Workflow we would've had to create a report like this in a couple of different ways: we could have developed a Web Forms Reporting Dashboard or a SQL Reporting Services report. Both of these options would have required some significant development time and additional cost to the project. Ticketing Functionality Some of the new ticketing functionality that was created for ServiceDesk 7 in Workflow allows us to develop these reports quickly and easily. I think it is important to note the ticketing functionality wasn’t developed...

New Version of Symantec Installation Manager (7.0.553), Now Handling Compressed pl.xml File Download?

I'm not sure that this is totally new but I have only noticed it now, apparently related to some side effect of the changes or may be not (see forum entry here). SIM now handles compressed pl.xml so the download process is much faster than before, because the compressed xml file is now 3.4MB versus 19.3MB uncomrpessed. This is a pretty good compression ratio of 5.74. And it has a direct impact on user experience, as the following screen shots do show a download time difference using the raw versus zip download path. First I had to make sure the zip path is in use in the registry (not default yet): Then download took 9 seconds! ...

Back onto DS Communication Troubleshooting... Client Communications

I can happily state that I had no DS issues of the "bad kind" (hard to resolve, generic or systemic problem type) for a few month now. No need to specify that I was very happy with this state of play, thanks to the release of DS 6.9 SP3! But has it happens, there's always a time when new problems are found, or old ones crop back up one way or another. So I'm back onto the classic Aclient / DAgent -> DS connectivity issue. I'll take this opportunity to refresh my brain on how DS handles communications to the clients (... off to Google Doc to create a diagram for this -> back from Google doc, got the png files attached below). This is only a very rough overview that shows which elements in the communication chain are creating log files. From the AClient (or DAgent) up we have...

A poor man's version of open source: sql

One of the best features of SQL (the sql language, and it's various vendor specific implementations) is that (almost) everything is open and accessible. Tables, views, stored procedures, triggers, indexes. You name it. You can look at all of those objects, edit them, do anything you like with them. Hence the title of this blog entry: it's a poor man's version of open source in a sense that anyone with interest could contribute code review and improvement (I've have an article on this pending administrator's approval - so watch this space) for the benefits of everyone (using NS) thanks to this site (Connect, a name that serves the purpose). And being open and allowing more people to help has proven to be a really successful strategy in many places and software projects (again IMHO).

Windows 7 N or KN versions

After doing some research I found that the difference between the regular version of Windows 7 and Windows 7 N or KN is that the N or KN is missing the media support and programs to be able to allow the multimedia to properly function.  There is a KB that can be installed to repair/fix the issue it is available on Microsoft's website.  Here is the link, for those of you who may possibly do the install of the KN or N and need the multimedia functionality. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=31017ed3-166a-4c75-b90c-a6cef9b414c4&displaylang=en

FYI: MS09-060 patch for Outlook 2007 (KB972363) introduces new functionality

FYI all...our testing so far with the Outlook 2007 patch this month (MS09-060) shows that it is introducing some of the improvements made in Office 2007 SP2 and several previously-released Outlook 2007 hotfixes (specifically KB969907).  Basically after installing and restarting Outlook or the machine, the first launch of Outlook will run a process which reindexes or otherwise optimizes your PSTs.  The message box is shown in the KB link to 969907.  Depending on the size/fragmentation of the PST, it can take a substantial amount of time (30+ minutes) for this to complete, and your users may wonder what is going on. This patch has also broken an Outlook add-in we use (Cisco MeetingPlace), which we still don't have a working solution for.  Remember...test, test, test!
