Migration: A migration is when you install the latest version of the IT Management Suite solutions on a new server, and then migrate the data from the earlier ITMS solutions to the latest version of the application.

Upgrade: An upgrade is when you install the latest version of ITMS on the same hardware, server operating system, and database.

You must migrate the Notification Server 6.x or 7.0 data to either Notification Server 7.1 SP2 or Notification Server 7.5. After migrating the data, you must first upgrade to either ITMS 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 or ITMS 7.5 HF6 depending on the path you choose and then upgrade to ITMS 7.5 SP1.

The following diagram gives an overview of the migration and upgrade process:

We’re loading up the RV and hitting the road with Symantec to talk about Altiris 7.5. And We’re Coming To A City Near You.

Okay, we’re not actually loading up an RV, but it sure would be fun if we could!  We’re so excited to be part of this big release. The Altiris experts from ITS will review the 7 and a half reasons everyone should consider upgrading to the Altiris 7.5 platform. We’ll provide an overview of the features and capabilities that are new to the 7.5 platform, as well as how those will enable better management of your IT environment. You’re probably asking yourself, what are we actually going to talk about? Here’s what we’ll be covering:

  • Cloud Enabled Management
  • Deployment Solution
  • Macintosh Management
  • Performance
  • Platform Support
  • Automation
  • ...

During a patch you get the error that there are remote console sessions open.

Use the configuration tool to clear all connections to the deployment server.

Are you ready to upgrade to Altiris 7.0?
An important question to ask when considering upgrading, we don’t need to just rush into installation.  Too often, want to upgrade to the next best thing before all pieces have been put together, but should we even upgrade then?  Things to consider:

  • Is my environment ready?
  • SQL 2005 is required, do you have the licensing to upgrade or will that be an additional purchase?
  • Do I have current maintenance on my Altiris products where I will be able to upgrade?
  • Technical Knowledge?
  • Do I have the technical knowledge to troubleshoot if something breaks or will I constantly have to call support?
  • Maybe a professional technician who has experience with this install would be better
  • Do you have custom reports or code which could be broke which is business critical?
  • SQL Experience is a plus when migrating the database to...

Authors Note: I apologize for all the abbreviations, I'm including the glossary at the front of the post for some extra clarity.

DMC - Dell Management Console - A free product, offered by Dell that is primarily used to manage the server environment. It includes hardware patching, limited inventory, and some monitoring capabilities.
SMP - Symantec Management Platform - The product formerly known as Altiris Notification Server. This is most often referred to as "Notification Server version 7".
SIM - Symantec Installation Manager - The automated install and update platform for all SMP related products. Prior to version 7, a previous tool AIM (Altiris Installation Manager) was optional to perform the same activities. With the advent of version 7 and the Symantec Management Platform designation, this is no longer the case. All installs and upgrades must be performed with the SIM.

Finally (look at the modified date on the file and you'll understand what I mean :D) R12 is out of the door and available on SolutionSam:

The Release notes are on the AKB [here's the link] but here are some information that can be gleamed from SolutionSam itself:

  • File size is 13,140 KB
  • Modified Date is 22/10/2009

Additionally there are a few fixes that I reported for my customer or that I know will fix some outstanding issues:

  • The Inventory forwarding data verification schedule now functions correctly. Previously, it did not work with large data sets [that's a strange issue we found with my customer back in R6 time frame when the first 20,000 entries...

The Super User Group in Cleveland on October 2, 2009 was a SUPER success!

We had approximately 100 customers in attendance from at least 5 User Groups: Cleveland, Columbus, Michigan, Pittsburgh, and Rochester. Surprisingly, there wasn't anyone there from Hawaii or Australia. Maybe next time.

Slides from the following Product Managers are attached to this blog:

  • Michael Grueber and Rene Kolga: Client Management Suite and Server Management Suite SP1
  • Hugo Parra: Deployment Solution
  • Jeremy Carter: Workflow
  • Vinny Buscarnera: ServiceDesk

If you attended the Super User Group, please...

For those of you who are security minded (in this day in age, it should be a hat we all wear, in my opinion) one of the best "knowledge aggregators" in the IT security field is
I subscribe to several of their digest emails, and when I was reading through the various topics in the Consensus Security (Vulnerability Alert Vol 8. No. 35)
today, I came across this important update (as it relates to Altiris Deployment Server):

SYM09-011 - Posted by Symantec on August 26th.

The four issues identified and addressed by installation of Deployment Server 6.9 Service Pack 3 (which incidentally was just released) are:

1) The DBManager authentication can potentially be bypassed. The...

I love the 1st time setup screen - with the remembered "checkbox" - As we do rarely install & activate all 1 shot, this checklist is really nice.
[Home > Notification Server Management > First Time Setup]
There are some missings, and probably some primary "must do" & secondary "nice to do" should be done.

It is just a pitty this screens keep a bug regarding the "inventory" & "Windows patch" parts, they are not able to keep the "checks" :-(

So don't loose time to check "Inventory", "Patch Management": it will never remember them...

Oh, also, don't think the latest SP2 will solve, it is not. Moreover, now when you click...
