For everyone that creates Virtual layers and know the pain that implies the fine tunning to support the complete feature set of the virtual versions of the applications, there is a new product which was designed to help you in this painful task.

SpyStudio is an Application tracer which shows and interprets calls, displaying the results in a structured way which is easy for any IT professional to understand. SpyStudio can understand the resources that an application uses, track down errors, detect malware and create application layers for virtualization.

SpyStudio has a trace comparison tool which is useful for identifying problems in virtualized environments. You can obtain two samples: the native version of the application and the virtual version which has the problems. Using the 'Compare traces' feature, you can see what is missing in the virtual environment. SpyStudio is the user-mode complement of Process Monitor.

Then, stop by the Internet Lounge at Vision and pick your sticker up. :)  That way, one of us from Connect will have the opportunity to meet you. And soon, all your fellow Connect users will realize that YOU are the one with all those fabulous comments.

I often ask my IT audiences when I speak at events "What is our purpose?" In other words, why do IT people do what they do and get paid for it? The answer is simpler than most people try to make it. Our primary purpose is to support end-user productivity. If we fail at that, then nothing else we do would be of any value and we would be out of jobs. I will admit there is a secondary category that is protecting confidential data (another thing Symantec is really good at). But that would also be moot if there was nothing of value worth protecting.

So what do users need to be productive, and how do we make sure that they have it? I mentioned in the last blog that "the desktop (virtual or otherwise) is the work environment, not the work itself." Think of the desktop as an office you enter to do your work. You want a comfortable chair, good lighting etc., but if you...
