How does a leading Danish public authority cope with what appear to be three opposing forces: reducing the cost of IT services delivery, providing a reliable IT service to 30,000 users, and ensuring peak performance? For Copenhagen City Council, the answer was simple: Symantec. The Council has introduced an integrated client management and endpoint security solution―underpinned by Symantec Business Critical Services―to ensure every endpoint is securely protected from malicious malware threat and quickly and reliably package applications, distributing them sometimes to users in a zero-touch environment. Once the workflow goes live, software deployment time is expected to drop from up to 10 days to half an hour . The Council has also experienced a 20 percent increase in endpoint administration productivity, and more reliable deployments, faster software rollouts, and standardized processes and desktops.

Regarding some of the other message threads from SilentCastle (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/swv...) and (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/v...) mentioning how Trend conflicts with SWV, we have been in contact with Trend and trying to find a fix for our environment as well and their engineers supplied us with the registry fix as well the files to overwrite the default scanning engine. I hope others in the community using Trend can benefit from the performance increases.

VMWorld 2010 is right around the corner! This is an exciting conference for Symantec Endpoint Virtualization and we hope you'll be stopping by to say hello while you're at the conference.

We've got lots of technical sessions to share information with our community, as well as a booth where you can drop by and see our products live in action and talk with product experts about the challenges that virtualization addresses. We want to hear your stories as well, and find out what you're doing. Of course, a technology conference doesn't have to be all about technology, so we're throwing a party for our customers, have a game show planned, and of course will be giving away lots of cool prizes.

Join us for the Symantec Super Session
SS1006: Wednesday, Sept 1 at 1:30pm in Room 134 (Moscone North)

As with the rest of the Connect communities, Endpoint Virtualization will have a newsletter of it's own containing the most interesting information that has appeared in the community in the previous month. Anyone remember the old SVS Newsletter? Well if you do, then you know what I'm talking about - you won't want to miss an issue! But you will if you don't subscribe! It's simple. Go to your user profile and click on the "Newsletters" tab (see? not rocket science), then check the box next to "Endpoint Virtualization", finally click "Save Settings" and you're done!

One note - occasionally our newsletters end up in your spam folder (imagine that!) I set up a filter in my email client that makes sure everything from Connect@symantec.com goes to my inbox. I work here, it seemed like the right thing to do!

Sign up now and Happy Reading!

Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2 will reach the end of support on July 13th, 2010, for more information read: End of Support for Windows 2000, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista RTM

Please note, this end of support doesn't have any effect for the Windows XP 64 bit version.

There's no SP3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP  with SP2, you have the latest service pack and will continue to be eligible for support and receive updates until April 8, 2014.

UPDATE!! We've been toiling busily over the past few weeks, testing and tweeking code, then testing some more. It's time to pull back the curtain and and introduct the newest member of the Connect family - the Endpoint Virtualization community. With all the testing we did behind the scenes, there is bound to be some surprises here and there (I've already found a few) and over the next few days we'll be sprucing things up. If you see something that doesn't belong here or looks a little odd, send me a private message and I'll take care of it.

Thanks for your patience and welcome to the new community - I'm baking everyone cookies!

For Symantec Workspace Virtualization (SWV) 6.1 SP4 we’ve changed our default file package format from VSA to the new XPF package.  While VSAs will still be available as an Export option for the time being—XPFs bring numerous benefits to not just SWV but Symantec Workspace Streaming (SWS) so the whole suite as a whole.

The reason for this change in format is we wanted a single package type that could be used in SWV or SWV without any additional modifications so, in other words, if you have an XPF you can import it into SWV or load it into the streaming server as is.

What it is
XPF, or Extensible Package Format, is the new package format going forward for the Workspace Suite.  It replaces VSAs and Streaming Snapshots but not VRAs, VPAs, Tracking Packages or Upgrade Packages.

From a virtualization standpoint there’s very little change over VSAs:  SWVadmin and SVScmd both behave the same, regular and...

At Symantec Vision 2010 - Symantec and Intel demonstrated an interesting use case for out-of-band management.

Take a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tigr19IMda0

Imagine being able to reclaim an application license even when the remote system is powered off.   See the demo
