I often ask my IT audiences when I speak at events "What is our purpose?" In other words, why do IT people do what they do and get paid for it? The answer is simpler than most people try to make it. Our primary purpose is to support end-user productivity. If we fail at that, then nothing else we do would be of any value and we would be out of jobs. I will admit there is a secondary category that is protecting confidential data (another thing Symantec is really good at). But that would also be moot if there was nothing of value worth protecting.

So what do users need to be productive, and how do we make sure that they have it? I mentioned in the last blog that "the desktop (virtual or otherwise) is the work environment, not the work itself." Think of the desktop as an office you enter to do your work. You want a comfortable chair, good lighting etc., but if you...

The new version is 6.1 SP6 MP1, and applies to both Workspace Streaming and Workspace Virtualization.  As usual there is a list of fixes, but there are also some new features that are pretty noteworthy.

On the top of the list is 64-bit support.  Yay!  A lot of people have been waiting for this.  So now, 64-bit clients are supported on all Windows 7 varieties, plus Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 SP2.  64-bit is also supported on the server operating systems as well.

Next up are a couple of items I’ve been looking forward to for years, streaming by file association and dependent streaming.  So now an application may be streamed at times OTHER than when its icon is clicked.  The two new situations are when you click on a document with the appropriate extension, the corresponding application will stream.  You can set this in the console, just like you set if you want the application to be set for...

How does a leading Danish public authority cope with what appear to be three opposing forces: reducing the cost of IT services delivery, providing a reliable IT service to 30,000 users, and ensuring peak performance? For Copenhagen City Council, the answer was simple: Symantec. The Council has introduced an integrated client management and endpoint security solution―underpinned by Symantec Business Critical Services―to ensure every endpoint is securely protected from malicious malware threat and quickly and reliably package applications, distributing them sometimes to users in a zero-touch environment. Once the workflow goes live, software deployment time is expected to drop from up to 10 days to half an hour . The Council has also experienced a 20 percent increase in endpoint administration productivity, and more reliable deployments, faster software rollouts, and standardized processes and desktops.

Regarding some of the other message threads from SilentCastle (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/swv...) and (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/v...) mentioning how Trend conflicts with SWV, we have been in contact with Trend and trying to find a fix for our environment as well and their engineers supplied us with the registry fix as well the files to overwrite the default scanning engine. I hope others in the community using Trend can benefit from the performance increases.
