This article uses popular statements done by the people selling Cloud Computing to explain what cloud computing is and most of all is not. This includes, but is not limited to, VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure).

Although Cloud computing is far from the Holy Grail it is said to be, I do believe it is the way to go. A big reality check however is in order. That is why I use the most popular advertisement slogans to give my opinion on the matter.

Even though I do not believe this is the only truth, it is a way to view Cloud Computing in any and all forms. You of course are allowed to make up your own mind. Please do, even. But do consider the given statements and the truth behind these statements.

Are these really the reasons you want/need Cloud? Then I would highly advise you to think again.

Then again: maybe the reasons are valid. Cloud Computing does offer interesting possibilities. The article in no-way truly debunks Cloud Computing as a solution, it...

I was asked by my company to create a 2-day training for SWV for an end user company. The training needed to enable the end user company to make simple packages, clean them and deploy them.

That got me thinking... what do you actually do when creating a package. Explaining to the IT people of the company to simply "install, but first turn on recording" would be a little to easy and lazy. Is that really what we do when packaging?

Then again... Isn't it really what we do?

So this is how I build up the training:

  1. Day 1 morning: Theory about packages: What do they contain. Why Read Only and Read Write, registry and files (a nice four segmented diagram helps here). What does an installation actually attempt to do and what does Symantec SWV do with it? Version control on packages.
  2. Day 1 afternoon: Practical use: Make some packages. Let them test amongst each other. Simple but neat packages, like FireFox, Notepad ++, nothing...

Sometime happens that you need to check if a certain Microsoft .NET version is installed on a computer, the typical example is a program that requires a particular .Net version to run correctly. The manual way is through Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel. But this list could be wrong because the entries shown in the control panel  can be easily removed from registry.

If you need to be sure that all versions are detected correctly, there is a nice freeware tool called .NET Version Detector. This portable tool helps you to collect and report all information about the different versions installed on a machine. Also detailed information is given on where the .NET Frameworks are installed with links to the directories. This information can easily be copied by a user, to paste in a mail.

If a certain version isn't on the machine, you can simply follow the link that .NET Version Detector suggests, so it is easy for the novice user to find the runtimes....

March 2, 2012 will be a date that should be remembered. At that date the decision was made to build the largest VDI in the Cloud architecture. An incredible 1.200.000 VDI desktops should be started in the Cloud waiting for end users.

As almost every device is supported, it will change the world of computing as we know it right now. Why buy a PC if you can have access to your own fully supported desktop at a fraction of the price? Every day you logon you will get a complete new PC, with your own personal settings and your own software. And you can use it any time, any where and on any device.

May 1st we will have the first 100.000 desktops up and running and we will have over 400 applications packaged. And it will grow and grow.

So now we have an incredible task to build up the team that is going to develop and deploy the VDI desktop and ensures that all applications can run in this desktop.

And the technology that enables us to make this happen is...

Customers who use Symantec Workspace Virtualization can choose between the Standard Version or the Pro Version that includes streaming. Between SWV and SWV Pro you can also use SMART. And there is a new version available that you can use to centraly manage your applications, and give the end user some control on his layers like activate, de-activate and reset.

The new version can be downloaded from our website or you can send me a message and I will ensure you get a version.

Just like SWV, DinamiQs SMART is free for home and personal use. In the world of VDI DinamiQs has set new standards for speed, efficiency and end-user experience. Part of the DinamiQs VDI stack is S.M.A.R.T., which has developed into a full fledged Desktop and Software management application.

The S.M.A.R.T. software helps end-users access those applications that they are entitled to. S.M.A.R.T. allows self-service and self-repair of these –packaged applications....

What once started as a website for Virtualization nerds has become the huge Symantec community of today.

I can still remember the day's that Altiris Juice started. What a cool idea to reward contributors and give space for those nerds.

And wow.

Looking at my stats I just saw that within three weeks i will be celebrating my 5 year membership:

Member for: 4 years 49 weeks

If I think about this, there is no other webiste that I visit and contribute to as long as what i still call juice.

And that is what it is for me

for almost 5 year Symantec connect gives me juice in my work.

Keep up the good work.
