Sometime happens that you need to check if a certain Microsoft .NET version is installed on a computer, the typical example is a program that requires a particular .Net version to run correctly. The manual way is through Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel. But this list could be wrong because the entries shown in the control panel  can be easily removed from registry.

If you need to be sure that all versions are detected correctly, there is a nice freeware tool called .NET Version Detector. This portable tool helps you to collect and report all information about the different versions installed on a machine. Also detailed information is given on where the .NET Frameworks are installed with links to the directories. This information can easily be copied by a user, to paste in a mail.

If a certain version isn't on the machine, you can simply follow the link that .NET Version Detector suggests, so it is easy for the novice user to find the runtimes....

Nirsoft is a well known collection of portable applications for Windows. There are hundreds of different utilities developed, like password recovery utilities, network monitoring tools, web browser tools, Internet related utilities or programmers tools.

A nice tool that allows you to easily find and run the desired utility is NirLauncher developed by Nirsoft.  This portable program is a front-end that collects Nirsoft tools divided by categories, like Password Recovery Tools, Network Tools, Web Browser Tools, etc.  NirLauncher has a size of 16 MB unpacked and can be stored in your USB drive.

MyUninstaller tool is helpful to find the correct uninstall string for whatever installed software application.

This portable tool shows a list of all installed application with a lot of details and additional information that the standard Add/Remove applet doesn't display: product name, company, version, uninstall string, installation folder, etc.

Other interesting feature is the export function that allows to save all information into a text file or HTML file, this can be really helpful in case of you will have to re-install manually you current software after a PC migration.

Parkdale, free and portable utility to quickly perform a speed test on disks, cdroms and network shares. Helpful to investigate how and where are bottlenecks in local and network connections.

The program has two different modes:

BlockAccess - The test data is read from/written onto the disk directly without using the filesystem.
FileAccess - The test data is read from/written into a normal file using the filesystem.

DriverBackup is a nice small free tool for easily backup and restore your system drivers. The basic commands are easy, select All, OEM or Third part drivers and start the backup. Restoration process is quick and safe, just run the tool and restore all drivers or just some of them.There are some interesting features like multilanguage GUI (English, Italian, German, French, Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese), run backup / restore task from command line or script, support to MS Windows OS starting from 95 to 7 ( 32 / 64bit ).

The DriveLetterView tool allows to view and change drive letter assignments in your system even if drives are not currently plugged. The nice GUI shows all local drives, remote network shares, DVD drives and USB drives.

Helpful in case of USB device in conflict with other existing drives or if you want remove USB devices that you don't use anymore. To change the drive letter of USB device or remote network drive, simply select the desired drive letter and use the 'Change Drive Letter' option (F9).
