Several people have worried that the files downloaded by Yahoo Messenger's Installer are not put into the Yahoo Messenger Virtual Software Package(VSP). SVS DOES keeps track of all the files and puts them in the Yahoo Messenger VSP.

After Installing with Single Program Capture, SVS seems to hang. The installer launched a process that is still running in the background; use process explorer to kill the process. SVS will then end the capture of Yahoo. You can restart the Virtual Software Package(VSP) by deactivating the VSP and then reactivating it.

The install for Yahoo Toolbar is not yinst_current.exe. This is the web-install and has not been tested. To obtain the install do the following

  1. Go to http://toolbar.yahoo.com
  2. When asked to run the yinst_current.exe, save it somewhere and wait until the page times out.
  3. The error message should include a link that allows you to download the real installer.
  4. Download this and use it as the program install to capture in the layer.

XnView for Windows with Plugins

Works great as a global capture so you can also install all the add-ins/plugins. Be sure to exclude the layers where you want to edit files.

Application Name - WS_FTP Pro

Application Vendor - Ipswitch

Application Version - 6.06

What OS was the VSA capture performed on - Win XP Pro SP2

Import from VSA tested to work on different machine (Y/N) - Y

List of OS versions VSA was tested on - Win2K, Win2K3

Capture hints - Nothing special. Single program capture.

Suggested/Optional package edits - Be sure you have the right excludes and/or data layers in place to keep downloaded files out of the WS_FTP layer.

Things to watch for

Note: Version 2006 doesn't work. It reverts to trial version, and won't let you put in the registration keycode.

This is a part of my development environment and as such it must be virtualized. SourceInsight and Microsoft Visual Source Safe are also running the same way. I have an exclude for my source tree (C:\dev\src) in each of the layers, and so far no problems.

No known issues. You can even run multiple instances of WinZip on the same machine.

When virtualizing WinZIP, you should do your extractions into either a data layer or into the base (that is, a directory that you know you have an exclude for on the WinZIP VSP). I have a data layer for “My Documents” and I have an exclude on my WinZIP layer (and every layer, for that matter!) for c:\temp. So I never have a problem. I put .zip’s into (and typically extract them in) either something under “My Documents” or in c:\temp.
