  Workspace Virtualization - Persistent Profile Data

  Being part of the Symantec Endpoint Virtualization team gives me a lot of exposure to all types of virtualization projects.  I am starting to get involved with more and more of what I call Phase II VDI (VMware View / Citrix XenDesktop) projects.  Most customers are struggling to get Phase I project widely implemented because of the cost of servers and storage.  In Phase II they are starting to experiment with non-persistent VDI images.  The customers are hoping that this will help keep their storage costs under control. I am hopeful that this Phase works out better than the first phase because our technologies are an ideal piece of this type of implementation.  Using our Workspace Streaming products you would have the ability to deliver applications down each time the user logs in.  I plan on writing an entire article on this topic alone to help users implement this as effectively as possible.   Configuring Workspace Profiles UNC Path

  I have been spending a fair amount of time with Symantec Workspace Profiles the past couple of weeks.  The tool uses Microsoft roaming profiles as its foundation.  As you probably know roaming profiles can be configured using GPO's or it can be configured manually.  I didn't really understand how the manual configuration was implemented so I went to dev to find out.  Here is what I learned. When a user logs in the GINA will tell the machine that the user is using roaming profiles for example \\SEVDC\Profiles\Scot.  The Symantec Workspace Profiles tool then look through the UNC paths that have been added to the SWP tool.  If the first part of the path \\SEVDC\Profiles is in the list.  If it is Symantec Workspace Profiles will optimize the session.  If not, the session will use traditional Windows roaming profiles.   How to find the system uptime in a Windows Server

  Sometimes, for some reason (apply patches, schedule maintenance, installations, etc. ) you may need to know the uptime in a Windows server. A quick way to discover this information is by using Systeminfo. This utility provides information about a local or remote machine from the command line. And the interesting information shown is the "System Up Time" where to see how many time the server is up and running.   Over the years I always wondered what all these files in C:\Windows\System32 are doing in my Windows XP. I collected most of them and I added the function to them to keep track of what is going on in Windows. Below you find a part of this list. This list is the work of many people who give this information. I collected them and finally compled them into one list.   Extensions informer

  Like everybody I often have to search to what program an extension belongs. I found a very helpfull website that supports you in solving the questions. File extension is a set of characters after the dot in the name of a file. A file named "FileName.doc", for example, has "doc" as its file extension. Extension.informer.com is a database of file extensions and various programs that utilize them. All the information is gathered from the users' PCs through Software Informer Client. Just enter the desired extension in the "Search extension" box and push the "Find" button - and you will come up with a list of programs this extension can be associated with.   I found a nice tool to manage more than one remote desktop connection. This can be helpful for IT admins in the usual daily routine if they have to connect and manage several servers using the RDP connection.
