Greetings All -

Sunday marked the opening day of HIMSS 2009 in Chicago. This show included a special milestone for the Endpoint Virtualization team, having the opportunity to demo from the Dell booth as part of Dell's new Mobile Clinical Computing solution, which was announced in a press release earlier this morning.

Brian Lynah wowed the audience showing the use case of clinical staff roaming across multiple Dell device types in mid-keystroke, instantly switching from station to station using an identity card. The demo showed SSO, application auto launch, and mid-keystroke roaming maintaining state across several thin clients, laptops and a PC. The back-end desktop can be any infrastructure model, from a virtual hosted desktop to terminal services based desktops...

David Strom is known by many in the IT community from his weekly newsletters, commentary and product reviews. He has a comfortable, "man on the street" style and attracts quite a following on sites like Youtube. His product reviews are generally high level overviews for the uninitiated, rather than full blown feature by feature comparisons.

He has just completed a brief, 5 minute review of Endpoint Virtualization Suite and posted it on the locations below. You can see it here. Thank you to Ganesh and the PR folks for getting this done before our 17 Feb announcement.

I enjoyed it and hope you will too.

On Dec. 2, the US Patent and Trademark Office issued US patent #7,461,096, "Weighted prioritizing layered computing system." This is the fourth patent issued around the Fortress layering technology acquired with FSLogic by Altiris in early 2004. Fortress is the basis for Symantec's industry-leading application virtualization product, SVS. The full text and diagrams for the patent may be read here.

As has been discussed in other Juice articles, the functionality in SVS is made possible by a concept called "layering". Think of a layer as an overhead transparency. The transparency has file system and...

In his article entitled Delivering on the Promise of Endpoint Virtualization (Database Trends and Applications October 2008), Ken Berryman writes the following about Endpoint Virtualization:

The industry is buzzing with talk of endpoint virtualization. This innovation is often seen as a means to reduce enterprise endpoint costs and increase the agility of new endpoint deployments.

However, as many organizations discovered as they implemented server virtualization, unless such technologies are integrated within a single infrastructure framework that spans both the physical and virtual, they can add rather than reduce complexity and cost.

A well known German computer magazine posted an article on their home page stating that HP, together with a new generation of PC hardware, will deliver a "Virtual-Firefox-Browser". They also refer to Altiris Software Virtualization Solution, although they do not claim that the "sandboxed" Firefox will be virtualized using Altiris software.

Will this be the dawning of the age of Application Virtualization, where computer manufacturers that also sell IT outsourcing bring new value to their customers through amazing techniques like SVS?

Below is a link to the German article. If anybody wishes it, I could translate the main statements to English. Please let me know.

In this morning's ManageFusion keynote, Symantec Chief Operating Officer Enrique Salem announced that Symantec has signed a definitive agreement to acquire industry-leading application streaming vendor AppStream. AppStream has been providing the streaming component of Symantec's SVS Professional since June, 2007.

The combined power of application virtualization and application streaming enables enterprise IT to deliver software reliably, immediately, wherever it is needed, with automated license enforcement and compliance auditing. SVS Pro also enables new business models by providing the platform for delivery of any software as a service.

Streaming was a huge topic at ManageFusion yesterday, before attendees even knew of this morning's announcement....
