Some of you may be aware of a scenario in which the reclamation of Exchange 2010 database whitespace during item deletion or truncation is not as great as expected. So why is this a problem for Enterprise Vault customers?

Archiving data from a mailbox will frequently invoke either a deletion or truncation request to the Exchange server. If Exchange is not fully honouring this request then the database from which a customer is archiving will continue to grow as pending whitespace reclamation requests are not processed fully and available whitespace is not recognised.

The good news is that Microsoft have recognised and now resolved the issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2621266

So what was the problem?

In summary the primary complaint was that in some cases Exchange 2010 customers were noticing that their mailbox databases were continuing to grow even though archiving...

Is your organization among those that have jumped with both feet into the world of social media?

Recent survey results confirm that social media use is on the rise for almost all organizations across the globe.  This is particularly the case in the financial services industry.  A recent industry survey confirms that nearly two-thirds of all asset managers are actively using social media for marketing purposes.

Despite its increasing popularity and ubiquity, the securities industry is experiencing growing pains with social media.  Just like other industries, financial services providers are...

If you have not seen the movie “Super Size Me,” you have most likely heard  of it.  The film is a documentary where the lead eats 3 meals a day at the golden arches for one month and super sizes each meal.  As a result, he proceeds to see negative effects  - lack of energy,  weight gain,  decreased performance.  Sure, bigger can be better… but will super sizing your SharePoint storage environment (because you can) be your answer?

Did you know…? *

  • Scale is a focus for SharePoint– Microsoft Scalability highlighted updated performance numbers and a scalability demo featuring a 14TB single content database that successfully failed over in 5 seconds  (very impressive)
  • 80% of Fortune 500 companies have deployed SharePoint
  • There are over 65,000 unique customers

So where does that leave SharePoint customers?   Growth is inevitable.  How you handle...

Someone asked me recently whether rebuilding their mailbox archive index would mean that their Vault Cache would need to be reset also.

The answer is no, absolutely not, however I can understand where the confusion comes. If you’ve read the Virtual Vault best practices guide (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH124700) then you’ll probably know that Vault Cache uses an archive’s indexes to perform its initial synchronisation so that it can download the MDC header cache. The same  synchronisation process will then initiate the downloading of the content cache (if configured to do so).

So, why does rebuilding an archive’s index not interfere with the Vault Cache synchronisation process?

The answer is that Vault Cache only uses an archive’s index for its initial synchronisation - the first...

Are you or your securities firm among those who have jumped with both feet into the world of social media marketing?

A recent industry survey confirms that nearly two-thirds of all asset managers were actively using social media for marketing purposes.  This is consistent with other contemporary survey results, which establish that social media use is on the rise for organizations across the globe.

Despite the rising popularity of social media in the securities industry, retention of social media content continues to haunt securities firms.  Indeed, 63% of surveyed asset managers reported that “regulatory recordkeeping”...

Symantec Enterprise Vault™ will soon be celebrating its 12th birthday. Through those years, it has provided storage optimization and discovery/compliance capabilities to thousands of customers – a success by many measures. What made this success? There are many answers to this, but most boil down to just one thing - listening to where customers are feeling pain and providing a solution to help deal with this.

Enterprise Vault was originally built to help optimize Microsoft Exchange Server as a content source, and many more have followed since. Providing storage management capabilities to their Exchange administrators, customers were able to greatly reduce the amount of data stored within Exchange to make it an easier application to run, manage, backup and migrate/upgrade.

PST files, a curse in many IT departments, could finally be eradicated - their contents migrated into the archive to prevent data loss and corruption and to remove the risk of...

As some of you are aware, there was a limitation in the Enterprise Vault client where-by when it was used in a mixed bit client environment; specifically Windows 7 64-bit and Outlook 2010/2007 32-bit, the Vault Cache integration with Windows Desktop Search (WDS) did not function. This was due to a limitation in the way that WDS indexed the contents of Vault Cache. Vault Cache itself was unaffected and continued to operate perfectly, this was solely about it being indexed by WDS so that end users could use Window Explorer federated searches to include Vault Cache as a content source.

I am happy to announce that this limitation has been fixed and we have just released a version of the 9.0.2 client which contains this fix for the first time. This client (English only for now) will support all previously available client functionality as well as supporting WDS indexing the contents of Vault Cache in a mixed bit environment. If your end user workstations are running such a...

It can help tackle information growth head on, and make the most relevant and important data fully and easily searchable and available.

With Enterprise Vault 10 now fully available to Symantec customers worldwide, archiving just got smarter and faster.
