  FSA: Displaying thumbnails for archived images

    I’ve been asked a few times recently as to whether there is any way to display thumbnails of archived images. The short answer is no there is not. Windows deliberately does not display the thumbnail for offline (archived) files. This could cause a mass recall of archived files each time you browse a folder in Windows/File Explorer. This is something you do not want, particularly if the archived files are on slow media such as tape. So Windows leaves you with a generic image thumbnail for archived files. If you have hundreds or thousands of images in a folder, then it makes it very difficult to work out which image you want if they have been archived. While there is no direct fix for this, I have come up with a workaround which you may be able to use in certain situations.   File System Archiving now supports Windows Server 2012

    Hopefully you have seen our announcement that Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 is now generally available. This is an important release for us as it brings support for the latest wave of Microsoft products. I’d like to take a little time to talk about the File System Archiving (FSA) support for Windows Server 2012. Windows Server 2012 brings a wealth of new storage features to the table which will greatly help a Windows or storage administrator.   New FSA and SharePoint archiving best practice guides available

  In case you had not seen the new best practice guides posted in the 'articles' section of Connect, I wanted to make you aware of two new best practice guides which we have just published for File System Archiving and for SharePoint archiving.   File System Archiving: Instructor led training now available

  We have had a hole in our Enterprise Vault training catalogue to date by not having a dedicated File System Archiving course. FSA is touched on in the standard Exchange course but it does not give you the knowledge you need to know to install, configure, manage and troubleshoot. We have now developed a specific 4-day instructor led course dedicated to FSA. The first public teach will be in the Symantec, Reading, UK offices March 15th-18th. Registration is now open here.   File System Archiving in Enterprise Vault v9: FSAUndelete

  This is the third in my series of what's new for File System Archiving in Enterprise Vault v9.  Here I want to focus on a new utility we've delivered called FSAUndelete. This is there to help you when you need to granularly restore placeholders from a backup image and where you have Delete on Delete enabled. We all know that sooner or later end users will ask the IT department to restore some files that have been accidentally deleted. If you've been archiving the file system, then that restore request  may need to include non-archived files as well as placeholders pointing to the archived content. If you have not enabled Delete on Delete then there is nothing additional to worry about. Restoring placeholders from a backup image will straight away work. Better still, instead of having the IT team do the restore, point the user to Archive Explorer and let them recover the files themselves directly from the archive. However, if you are using...

  File System Archiving in Enterprise Vault v9: Bulk Recall

    Well, it's been too long since the last blog entry. I hope to make amends with that in the coming weeks and hope to be able to complete my series of blogs detailing the new FSA features that we delivered in Enterprise Vault v9. In this blog, I want to focus on the second new FSAUtility option - bulk recall. Like with the placeholder migration blog I wrote here , you may be thinking that FSAUtility already had this functionality. You would be partially correct. Existing versions of FSAUtility have the -t bulk restore option. We have introduced a new -b bulk recall option. Restore? Recall? What's the difference you may be asking. Let me explain.   File System Archiving in Enterprise Vault v9: Placeholder Migration

  Over the coming weeks I'm going to be writing a series of blogs detailing the enhancements to Enterprise Vault File System Archiving in v9. While these may not be big headline grabbing features, I think our existing customers will find them extremely valuable and beneficial. After all, the enhancements that we have delivered for FSA in v9 have all been directly driven by customer requests and feedback.   I'm going to start off by talking about placeholder migration. Once you have deployed FSA, the ability to easily manage the archived content and to be able to move placeholders around (without recall) for things like hardware refreshes or share re-organisations is key. Now some of you may be thinking that doesn't FSAUtility already have the ability to move placeholders?
