On April 7, 2014, a significant vulnerability was reported with OpenSSL. This vulnerability has been referred to as "Heartbleed" / CVE-2014-0160 (more details here -- ).

Symantec Enterprise has reviewed this vulnerability thoroughly.  In the final analysis, our infrastructure is not susceptible to the "Heartbleed" bug in the outdated OpenSSL library due to the following reasons:

1.       Our web servers do not use OpenSSL to provide services to customers.

2.       Our hardware and software suppliers confirmed the platforms and versions used to deliver our services are not vulnerable.

3.       We manually tested each customer web portal to confirm our systems are not vulnerable to this bug

No changes will need to be made to security certificates because our systems were...

Today we are announcing that Enterprise supports journal archiving from Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, which is great news for our customers considering an upgrade to the new platform. It is also great news for organizations that may not have an archive in place yet, but are looking to add one to help streamline their migration process (more on that here), while meeting their long-term information retention requirements and eDiscovery needs.

Any time I discuss the migration process with a customer, the conversation almost always turns to ingestion, which makes sense (if you are taking it out of one place, you likely need to put it in another place, right?).

Let’s cover what I mean by “ingestion” when talking about Enterprise – this is a carefully outlined process followed by our specially-trained Data Management team that allows us to...

Data volumes are exploding.  We see it all around us. The problem is that too much data can have a very negative impact on user productivity. Think about how long it takes to sift through emails after returning from vacation?  Consider how long it takes to complete a purchase on an Ecommerce sight on Black Friday?  The more data, the longer any of these processes take and the more time spent combing through more and more data.  The Informatica Application Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) team is working with Symantec and our customers to help them find ways to control the impact of ‘too much data’. We are helping them to define projects that improve their ability to meet SLAs and application performance, reduce costs and mitigate any compliance risks – all while IT budgets remain relatively flat.

If enterprises don’t take a proactive stance on managing data growth in both Structured and Unstructured data sources, data will...

by Greg Muscarella, Senior Director, Product Management

Once again Gartner has named Symantec as a leader in the Enterprise Information Archiving magic quadrant.  We’ve continued to invest significantly in this market and it is gratifying to see the recognition for the continued effort we put into archiving both in the cloud and on premises with our Enterprise and Enterprise Vault products. Symantec has now been rated a leader 9 years in a row.

This year marks a transition in a couple of regards.  We are seeing an acceleration of customers looking for the convenience and simplicity of SaaS based archiving solution...

There Are Many Mysteries In Life –

What’s behind door number 2?  Is it a boy or a girl?  Will my archive migration be successful?

Archiving is a long-term commitment between a vendor and its customers.  If this relationship fails, as a customer, you are forced to look at new options and consider migrating to a new vendor.  Whether you are moving from one on-premise archive to another or going to the cloud, this process can appear daunting, however through the years we have watched customers go through the process successfully. Here are some best practices to consider before migrating.

Things to Consider Before Migrating:

  1. Be realistic.  Set reasonable time lines and budgets for completion of the project. It is also important to set expectations with key stakeholders from your storage, backup, IT operations, legal/eDiscovery and messaging teams.
  2. Maintain data...

We are pleased to announce the latest release of Enterprise is now available!

Enterprise joined the Symantec archiving family in June 2011. Since then, our team has been busily working to deliver consistent updates to our customers. There has been buzz around the water cooler about this quarter’s release for several months because it means we can now help our clients securely archive content beyond email, including files from Microsoft® SharePoint and Box as well as public and private messages and attachments posted on Salesforce® Chatter.

What’s new – support for non-email content sources:

  • Microsoft SharePoint 2003, 2007 and 2010 (on-premise only): Capture files from SharePoint document libraries and make them available for search in the archive by end users and approved reviewers.
  • Box: Archive existing and new files stored in Box since the...

Here’s an interesting dilemma: What would you rather do – get your teeth cleaned at the dentist, or process a search request for your in-house Legal team?

On Monday, June 11, Symantec conducted a survey on the exhibit show floor during Microsoft TechEd North America 2012 in Orlando, FL. There, over 100 qualified respondents were asked a total of 18 questions surrounding their use of Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Exchange Online/Office 365.

Surprisingly – or maybe not – over a third of respondents would rather get their teeth cleaned at the dentist than process a search request on email for their in-house Legal team.

We learned from survey respondents that being able to search for archived and un-archived content within Exchange and beyond (45%) was one of their top eDiscovery goals. By indexing all information stored in the archive, Symantec...
