In case you had not seen the new best practice guides posted in the 'articles' section of Connect, I wanted to make you aware of two new best practice guides which we have just published for File System Archiving and for SharePoint archiving. The content has been gathered through many individuals both within Symantec and directly from our partners and customers. If you are running FSA or SharePoint archiving, or considering deploying either, I would definitely recommend giving these a read. The guides can be located here:

I recently blogged here to announce the availability of the instructor led File System Archiving training course. Initially the course was just scheduled in the UK. Dates have now been set for North America. You can view the schedule and register through the link here.

We have had a hole in our Enterprise Vault training catalogue to date by not having a dedicated File System Archiving course. FSA is touched on in the standard Exchange course but it does not give you the knowledge you need to know to install, configure, manage and troubleshoot.

We have now developed a specific 4-day instructor led course dedicated to FSA. The first public teach will be in the Symantec, Reading, UK offices March 15th-18th. Registration is now open here.

The course is aimed at customers, consultants, support engineers, SE's or generally anyone that has a vested interest in File System Archiving. The full course description can be found ...

This is the third in my series of what's new for File System Archiving in Enterprise Vault v9.  Here I want to focus on a new utility we've delivered called FSAUndelete. This is there to help you when you need to granularly restore placeholders from a backup image and where you have Delete on Delete enabled.

We all know that sooner or later end users will ask the IT department to restore some files that have been accidentally deleted. If you've been archiving the file system, then that restore request  may need to include non-archived files as well as placeholders pointing to the archived content.

If you have not enabled Delete on Delete then there is nothing additional to worry about. Restoring placeholders from a backup image will straight away work. Better still, instead of having the IT team do the restore, point the user to Archive Explorer and let them recover the files themselves directly from the archive.

However, if you are using...

Well, it's been too long since the last blog entry. I hope to make amends with that in the coming weeks and hope to be able to complete my series of blogs detailing the new FSA features that we delivered in Enterprise Vault v9.

In this blog, I want to focus on the second new FSAUtility option - bulk recall. Like with the placeholder migration blog I wrote here , you may be thinking that FSAUtility already had this functionality. You would be partially correct.

Existing versions of FSAUtility have the -t bulk restore option. We have introduced a new -b bulk recall option. Restore? Recall? What's the difference you may be asking. Let me explain.

Bulk restore will use the Enterprise Vault databases to work out what is needed to be restored to the file server. If you gave it a path of...

Over the coming weeks I'm going to be writing a series of blogs detailing the enhancements to Enterprise Vault File System Archiving in v9. While these may not be big headline grabbing features, I think our existing customers will find them extremely valuable and beneficial. After all, the enhancements that we have delivered for FSA in v9 have all been directly driven by customer requests and feedback.

I'm going to start off by talking about placeholder migration. Once you have deployed FSA, the ability to easily manage the archived content and to be able to move placeholders around (without recall) for things like hardware refreshes or share re-organisations is key. Now some of you may be thinking that doesn't FSAUtility already have the ability to move placeholders? The answer is yes it does, but it has specific use cases associated with it, which are not appropriate for some of the more common migration tasks.

Let me explain...

Attention:  Please note that Enterprise Vault 9.0 Beta and First Availability registration is now closed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enterprise Vault v9 is on the horizon and the beta program is going to be starting shortly. Having customers beta test our releases complements our own in house QA testing and helps to ensure that a quality release is delivered. We have already asked for customers interested in testing the Exchange 2010 functionality to signup for the beta. I'm looking for any of our FSA customers that may be interested in signing up for the beta.

FSA v9 will be bringing much requested enhancements and performance improvements to FSAUtility (for...

One of the great things about working on a product development team at Symantec is the depth of resources at our disposal to make our products as good as they can be. One of the resources that the Enterprise Vault team now makes extensive use of is the User Centered Design (UCD) team.

UCD is a process of product design & development that starts with end-users and their needs; rather than with technology.  It involves keeping users at the center and “checking in” with them in all the phases of development. The goal is to make our products easier to use, more efficient, more consistent and more satisfying.

As part of this process the UCD team works directly with our customers to understand your use cases and workflows and to see how well certain designs and proposals resonate within the install base. Feedback is gathered through interviews potentially using mock-ups and proto-type...

Over the last couple of years, we have seen a high uptake of Enterprise Vault File System Archiving (FSA) amongst our install base. However, we have not been able to offer support for customers where Apple Mac systems need to access the archived files. That is, until now. I’m excited to detail our support for FSA and Mac systems through our partnership with Group Logic.

First of all some background to why we have not been able to support Mac systems as clients for FSA. When we create placeholders we set the CIFS ‘O’ Offline attribute. A Windows client knows to treat this file differently to non-archived files. Indeed, on seeing the ‘O’ attribute set, Windows will change the icon of the file so that you have a visual indicator that this is a pointer to the file which is now “somewhere else”. (On Windows  XP you will see a black clock symbol in the bottom left of the file icon. With Vista and Windows 7 you will see an ‘X...
