A question we frequently hear is, "what versions of X can we use with EV"

This applies to the whole variety of Microsoft products as well as the other dependent products used in EV environments. So if you didn't already know, we publish a compatibility guide each month which has a wealth of information about what will or will not work with EV .

So in future when you need to check a dependency or compatibility please make the following document your first point of call.

We're aware that this change perhaps wasn't made clear enough in the release notes so wanted to make sure you all understand what has been done & why. In summary, the  IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt file can be used when a backup program can't use the archive bit (a value set on files to indicate it needs to be backed up).  For more info on the trigger file, refer to the "Backing up vault stores" section in the Admin Guide.

Before  V7 SP3 and  EV2007 SP1 the trigger file mechanism in EV only checked for the existence of the trigger file (IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt) . If the file was found ,EV renamed it to IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.old and processed all the outstanding Pending Icons (safety copies)  and changed them to full shortcuts. However, in the recent service packs, a change has been made so that EV now compares the creation date of the IgnoreArchiveBitTrigger.txt file against the last modified date of...

In this article we have highlighted a fix that was introduced in our recent service packs because we’re sure you’ll find it useful and because you may have missed the significance of this feature when you read the release notes.

Our rule of thumb for service packs is to use them to deliver a rollup of hot fixes and only introduce new functionality in major and minor releases. Doing this helps make service packs more palatable for quick deployment and keeps the development process focused. However, sometimes there will be exceptions to ‘the rule’ and in this case we believe an exception is warranted. Since it can be implemented with a minimum of impact to the EV environment this feature was introduced in the SP’s rather than waiting for the next release.

So what’s the new feature.

Prior to EV 2007 SP1 calendar attachments would simply be stripped if...

Last week we released service packs for EV2007 and V6, this is a little bit later than we had anticipated (see our earlier post for the SP schedule) but even so it's only a couple of weeks later than planned. In addition to the core EV service packs, note the that we've also released DA and CA service packs for each version.

Earlier this year we reviewed our strategy for service pack delivery and have stuck to a schedule during 2007 that we want to continue into next year. This means that we are releasing a SP each quarter for the current releases and not so frequent SPs for mature releases. We want to take this approach so that customers are less dependent upon hot fixes, which are by their very nature, created against tight deadlines and can't always be tested to the extent we'd like. With Service Packs we have a more formalised QA process which involves a greater level of integration testing. So the message is, you're better waiting for a Service Pack if you can. This is not to say we won't continue to provide HFs when appropriate but we want to concentrate on providing better SPs rather than frequent HFs. The schedule for the next 6 months is shown below and gives you an idea of the number of releases that we have to support...

Enterprise Vault Recognized As Industry Leader By Gartner and IDC

It has been a very exciting few months for Enterprise Vault.  Both Gartner and IDC have published reports illustrating our leadership within the email archiving market. We are pleased to say that Gartner placed us as the only leader in their 2007 Magic Quadrant for E-mail Active-Archiving. Here's a brief quote from them to explain what being a leader means.

"Leaders have the highest combined measures of an ability to execute and a completeness of vision. They offer the most comprehensive and most scalable products, and have a proven track record of financial performance and established market presence. In terms of vision, they are perceived as thought leaders, with well-articulated plans for ease-of-use, scalability and product breadth"

What is Information Foundation?

Some of you will have heard about this from our various events or other marketing efforts, but if you’ve not heard about this before, we felt we should explain why Enterprise Vault and Symantec Mail Security are now within the same product group.

Information Foundation is both a Symantec product strategy and a Symantec product suite; in brief it packages our industry leading products to help customers protect themselves against loss, spam, viruses, and other information risks while providing centralized archiving, audit, and E-Discovery for enterprise information. Symantec released Information Foundation 2007 as product suite, under a single, subscription SKU and price, in January of 2007

As a product strategy, information Foundation is focused on consolidating multiple, stand alone Information Risk Management (IRM) products and technologies into a single, integrated...

But with the advent of this Blog we will be able to bring you the official line on product development, service packs and keep you plugged in to the EV ecosystem.

So keep watching this Blog and spread the word; you can subscribe or use the RSS feed but you do need to register and get a SYM Account on the Symantec Technical Network, but this only takes a few minutes and you can do this...
