Enterprise Vault.cloud: Support for Exchange 2013 and Ingestion Process

Today we are announcing that Enterprise Vault.cloud supports journal archiving from Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, which is great news for our customers considering an upgrade to the new platform. It is also great news for organizations that may not have an archive in place yet, but are looking to add one to help streamline their migration process (more on that here), while meeting their long-term information retention requirements and eDiscovery needs. Any time I discuss the migration process with a customer, the conversation almost always turns to ingestion, which makes sense (if you are taking it out of one place, you likely need to put it in another place, right?). Let’s cover what I mean by “ingestion” when talking about Enterprise Vault.cloud – this is a carefully outlined process followed by our specially-trained Data Management team that allows us to...

Archive Migrations – Key Considerations Before Migrating

There Are Many Mysteries In Life – What’s behind door number 2?  Is it a boy or a girl?  Will my archive migration be successful? Archiving is a long-term commitment between a vendor and its customers.  If this relationship fails, as a customer, you are forced to look at new options and consider migrating to a new vendor.  Whether you are moving from one on-premise archive to another or going to the cloud, this process can appear daunting, however through the years we have watched customers go through the process successfully. Here are some best practices to consider before migrating. Things to Consider Before Migrating: Be realistic.  Set reasonable time lines and budgets for completion of the project. It is also important to set expectations with key stakeholders from your storage, backup, IT operations, legal/eDiscovery and messaging teams. ...

    Enterprise Vault FIPS Update

I just wanted to give you an update on Enterprise Vault's Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 (FIPS) compatibility. We've just updated the Enterprise Vault Compatibility Charts http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH38537 To indicate that EV 10.0.1 and above along with the existing EV 9.0.3 and above versions of the product are FIPS compatible. What does this mean? Any customer that requires a FIPS compatible version of EV can now upgrade to EV 10.0.1 or above (we'd always recommend the latest version available); if you're not aware of all the great EV 10 features, take a look at our why upgrade guide: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC5617...

FSA: Displaying thumbnails for archived images

I’ve been asked a few times recently as to whether there is any way to display thumbnails of archived images. The short answer is no there is not. Windows deliberately does not display the thumbnail for offline (archived) files. This could cause a mass recall of archived files each time you browse a folder in Windows/File Explorer. This is something you do not want, particularly if the archived files are on slow media such as tape. So Windows leaves you with a generic image thumbnail for archived files. If you have hundreds or thousands of images in a folder, then it makes it very difficult to work out which image you want if they have been archived. While there is no direct fix for this, I have come up with a workaround which you may be able to use in certain situations. The premise of the workaround is to create a separate thumbnail file which does not get archived. So when browsing a folder you would see the thumbnail and the archived file,...

    Is Exchange Journaling insecure?

Sounds strange doesn't it? Exchange Journaling, the process used by thousands of Exchange customers all over the world to ensure that have a defensible and reliable eDiscovery position, has been called into question by... Microsoft! So why would Microsoft state that Journaling is insecure? Microsoft consider that any data that leaves Exchange is inherently insecure as it no longer resides in the Exchange store. On this basis, that’s any data not in the store: mailboxes in Outlook cached mode, messages viewed on many common mobile devices, OWA 2013 when it caches messages, PST files (yes we all know about PST's). The reality is that "insecure" really boils down to your security practices and perimeters, and your comfort with data extending beyond it. The other side to this is handling the volumes of messages generated as a result of enabling Exchange Journaling; it can be substantial. Enterprise Vault has customers...

File System Archiving now supports Windows Server 2012

Hopefully you have seen our announcement that Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 is now generally available. This is an important release for us as it brings support for the latest wave of Microsoft products. I’d like to take a little time to talk about the File System Archiving (FSA) support for Windows Server 2012. Windows Server 2012 brings a wealth of new storage features to the table which will greatly help a Windows or storage administrator. However, one of the inevitabilities of life these days is the ever increasing data volumes. Whilst Windows Server 2012 will allow you to scale to greater storage capacities, it does little to actually curtail the data growth. One of the new features of Windows Server 2012 is the addition of block level deduplication to a...

Symantec and Informatica: Better Together for Unstructured and Structured Archiving

Data volumes are exploding.  We see it all around us. The problem is that too much data can have a very negative impact on user productivity. Think about how long it takes to sift through emails after returning from vacation?  Consider how long it takes to complete a purchase on an Ecommerce sight on Black Friday?  The more data, the longer any of these processes take and the more time spent combing through more and more data.  The Informatica Application Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) team is working with Symantec and our customers to help them find ways to control the impact of ‘too much data’. We are helping them to define projects that improve their ability to meet SLAs and application performance, reduce costs and mitigate any compliance risks – all while IT budgets remain relatively flat. If enterprises don’t take a proactive stance on managing data growth in both Structured and Unstructured data sources, data will...

Symantec positioned highest in execution and vision in Gartner archiving MQ

by Greg Muscarella, Senior Director, Product Management Once again Gartner has named Symantec as a leader in the Enterprise Information Archiving magic quadrant.  We’ve continued to invest significantly in this market and it is gratifying to see the recognition for the continued effort we put into archiving both in the cloud and on premises with our Enterprise Vault.cloud and Enterprise Vault products.
