As a kid, I always thought it’d be cool to reach my hand out of the plane window and touch a cloud. I know – it’s impossible. But I still wanted to do it. So it’s somewhat ironic that I now “touch” the cloud every day as I spread the word about how Enterprise Vault.cloud, our hosted archiving solution, can help organizations meet mailbox management, compliance and eDiscovery requirements.

That’s why I’m excited to invite our customers and partners to “touch” the cloud at our upcoming user extravaganza - Vision 2012. I have the good fortune to be able to travel abroad occasionally for work and pleasure. In my travels, I’ve learned that borders matter. Each country has its own customs, laws and regulations. Some are obvious. For example, do people drive on the left side of the road or the right? However, many differences are not visible. The latter is certainly true when it comes to understanding the legal and compliance environment for data privacy, retention and eDiscovery. As organizations globalize, it is increasingly important that they have this knowledge.

Such a task, however, should not be daunting. There are resources that provide some basic, straightforward answers on international legal issues at no cost. We're really pleased that from today we've now got a newly named SymConnect community just for Archiving & eDiscovery. Without doubt, many of our customers are moving their EV environment to a Virtualised platform. This partly due to the obvious cost & operational benefits but also because customers are planning their upgrade cycles through from V8 to V9 and onto V10. In fact if you check our pre-reqs for running V10 in our compatibility guide, you’ll see that we support only Windows 2008 R2 or later. So yes, moving from an old x32 hardware platform to a new x64 virtualised environment is proving to be a popular route for many.
