Sounds strange doesn't it? Exchange Journaling, the process used by thousands of Exchange customers all over the world to ensure that have a defensible and reliable eDiscovery position, has been called into question by... Microsoft!

So why would Microsoft state that Journaling is insecure?

Microsoft consider that any data that leaves Exchange is inherently insecure as it no longer resides in the Exchange store. On this basis, that’s any data not in the store: mailboxes in Outlook cached mode, messages viewed on many common mobile devices, OWA 2013 when it caches messages, PST files (yes we all know about PST's). The reality is that "insecure" really boils down to your security practices and perimeters, and your comfort with data extending beyond it.

The other side to this is handling the volumes of messages generated as a result of enabling Exchange Journaling; it can be substantial. Enterprise Vault has customers...

Hopefully you have seen our announcement that Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 is now generally available. This is an important release for us as it brings support for the latest wave of Microsoft products. I’d like to take a little time to talk about the File System Archiving (FSA) support for Windows Server 2012.

Windows Server 2012 brings a wealth of new storage features to the table which will greatly help a Windows or storage administrator. However, one of the inevitabilities of life these days is the ever increasing data volumes. Whilst Windows Server 2012 will allow you to scale to greater storage capacities, it does little to actually curtail the data growth.

One of the new features of Windows Server 2012 is the addition of block level...

Today Enterprise Vault reaches an important milestone, and it is with great pleasure that I can announce the general availability of Enterprise Vault 10.0.3. For those of you who have been waiting for this release, you can download the bits from Symantec File Connect here and install right away.

“So what’s in this release? It’s just a service pack isn’t it?” I hear you say.

Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 not only brings a whole host of updates to give support for the latest and greatest Microsoft and Domino offerings but it also includes some great new features and functionality aimed specifically at making administering Enterprise Vault easier. Let’s take a brief look at what’s included:

  • Support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013
  • Support for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013
  • Support for Microsoft Outlook 2013 (on the desktop)
  • Support...

Data volumes are exploding.  We see it all around us. The problem is that too much data can have a very negative impact on user productivity. Think about how long it takes to sift through emails after returning from vacation?  Consider how long it takes to complete a purchase on an Ecommerce sight on Black Friday?  The more data, the longer any of these processes take and the more time spent combing through more and more data.  The Informatica Application Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) team is working with Symantec and our customers to help them find ways to control the impact of ‘too much data’. We are helping them to define projects that improve their ability to meet SLAs and application performance, reduce costs and mitigate any compliance risks – all while IT budgets remain relatively flat.

If enterprises don’t take a proactive stance on managing data growth in both Structured and Unstructured data sources, data will...

Once again Gartner has named Symantec as a leader in the Enterprise Information Archiving magic quadrant.  We’ve continued to invest significantly in this market and it is gratifying to see the recognition for the continued effort we put into archiving both in the cloud and on premises with our Enterprise Vault.cloud and Enterprise Vault products. Symantec has now been rated a leader 9 years in a row.

This year marks a transition in a couple of regards.  We are seeing an acceleration of customers looking for the convenience and simplicity of SaaS based archiving solution...

There Are Many Mysteries In Life –

What’s behind door number 2?  Is it a boy or a girl?  Will my archive migration be successful?

Archiving is a long-term commitment between a vendor and its customers.  If this relationship fails, as a customer, you are forced to look at new options and consider migrating to a new vendor.  Whether you are moving from one on-premise archive to another or going to the cloud, this process can appear daunting, however through the years we have watched customers go through the process successfully. Here are some best practices to consider before migrating.

Things to Consider Before Migrating:

  1. Be realistic.  Set reasonable time lines and budgets for completion of the project. It is also important to set expectations with key stakeholders from your storage, backup, IT operations, legal/eDiscovery and messaging teams.
  2. Maintain data...

We are pleased to announce the latest release of Enterprise Vault.cloud is now available!

Enterprise Vault.cloud joined the Symantec archiving family in June 2011. Since then, our team has been busily working to deliver consistent updates to our customers. There has been buzz around the water cooler about this quarter’s release for several months because it means we can now help our clients securely archive content beyond email, including files from Microsoft® SharePoint and Box as well as public and private messages and attachments posted on Salesforce® Chatter.

What’s new – support for non-email content sources:

  • Microsoft SharePoint 2003, 2007 and 2010 (on-premise only): Capture files from SharePoint document libraries and make them available for search in the archive by end users and approved reviewers.
  • Box: Archive existing and new files stored in Box since the...

** Update

Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 is available from today. See announcement here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/enterprise-vault-1003-reaches-general-availability

----------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft have announced RTM for both Exchange Server 2013 and Office 2013.

With volume licensing customers able to download and install these products by mid-November the next step for any Enterprise Vault customer is to determine when Enterprise Vault will support these releases. So to that point:

  • Exchange Server 2013 and Office 2013 will both be supported with a 10.0.3 release early next year (planned January 2013).

As with all new major version releases like this we want to ensure that the software is fully tested against the final RTM builds....

We are pleased to announce that Enterprise Vault 10.0.2 is now available!

Enterprise Vault 10.0.2 compliments Enterprise Vault 10.0.1 as well our recent VMware Ready certification announcement. With this update, we have introduced significant enhancements to Microsoft SharePoint archiving, added new Microsoft Exchange archiving reports and enhanced integration with the Clearwell eDiscovery Platform from Symantec.

What’s new in Enterprise Vault 10.0.2:

  • Archive more SharePoint content – Enterprise Vault 10.0.2 allows you to archive SharePoint content beyond document libraries. Now you are able to  archive wikis, discussion boards, custom lists, “My Sites” and...

Today Symantec will announce the release of Enterprise Vault 10.0.2 which includes major changes to our SharePoint agent.   EV has supported SharePoint since 2002 and has always provided storage optimization by replacing documents with 6 byte shortcuts that are completely seamless to the user.

In EV10.0.2 we extend the agent’s capabilities to also archive custom lists, blogs, wikis, discussion boards and several other list types.

This new functionality expands the solution in three ways:

  1. Further storage optimization – Now EV for SharePoint can replace attachments from supported list and social media with shortcuts dramatically reducing overall SharePoint storage

  2. Address Site Proliferation – When I speak to SharePoint Administrators, one of their primary concerns is addressing site proliferation.   Sites often long outlive their usefulness yet no one wants to be...
