Businesses are adopting new technology at an unprecedented pace, and the cloud is one area where we’re making the most progress. And by now it’s clear that the cloud provides significant advantages to businesses, improving agility and reducing costs. But there is a darker side as well that organizations may overlook – hidden costs of cloud implementation that can negate the benefits if not properly contained.

The 2013 Symantec Avoiding the Hidden Costs of Cloud Survey reveals some of these unanticipated challenges businesses face as they look to take advantage of today’s efficient cloud solutions. The businesses surveyed showed that, compared to a year ago, cloud adoption is seeing significant progress. In fact, 90 percent of them are now at least discussing the cloud, an increase from 75 percent a year before. But at the same, cloud computing presents its own set of challenges, and industry experts anticipate that security issues and outages will...

By Dan Lamorena, Director, Product Marketing, Storage and Availability Management Group

A couple of weeks ago, my colleague Kevin Haley posted the Top Five Security Predictions for 2013. Today we share with you the top storage predictions for 2013.

As we share them, we realize that we don’t have solutions that address all of the facets of these predictions, but it is what we see as major issues addressing the market in the coming year based on our experience and conversations with our customers and partners.

1. Hypervisor market share will dramatically change with greater diversity of virtualization solutions.

The market share of hypervisor vendors will begin to see major changes between the largest...

The technology landscape is rapidly changing into a more mobile and cloud-based world.  And in this world, the end user and servers (services provided to the end user) are ‘virtual’ or decoupled from devices, physical machines and networks.

However, there are a few constants:

  • The user and server have to share a single root of trust with one another (mutual authentication)
  • The data and sharing of the data drives a lot of the end user experience; not the device or the application
  • In this evolving technology landscape, who does what  with any piece of data is the most important aspect of providing security
  • Harnessing the humongous data...

Symantec’s first State of Information report examined how organizations are dealing with information today, in light of significant changes in the data center. Symantec’s Digital Information Index sheds light on where information is being stored today, as well as some of the challenges that businesses are dealing with as a result of this transition in the way we store and access our information.

Information is moving from traditional storage in data centers to devices outside of the corporate firewall. This new category of unorganized, duplicative information is referred to as “information sprawl.” Symantec’s Digital Information Index provides a barometer for information sprawl in different...

With this year quickly coming to an end, it’s time for us at Symantec to publish our predictions on what we expect will happen in the world of cybersecurity for the coming year.

Most of us at Symantec tend to be fact-based, data-driven individuals. However, predicting the future always involves a bit of speculation. To derive our predictions for 2013, we began by talking to hundreds of security experts at Symantec to gather their thoughts and ideas. Then, we peer-reviewed these ideas, argued a lot, and boiled it all down to a handful of predictions that we felt would provide real insight into where we believe the threat landscape is going.

While these predictions are based on what we see today, they also reflect where we think things are going based on our years of...

Clouds are a law unto themselves. They float freely, without regard for geographic, political or national demarcation lines. With a fair wind at their disposal, they can go more or less wherever they please. Of course, you could also argue that they are at the mercy of the elements and that these control their every move.

Which creates a clever analogy with cloud computing. Should it be allowed to ‘wander’ wherever it might please, without restriction, or should there be forces in place that dictate how and where they may operate?

It’s a big question and there are big numbers involved, with the market for cloud computing having surged in recent years. Market research firm IDC expects businesses worldwide to spend $28.2 billion on cloud services this year alone, up...

With IT budgets that are shrinking or barely holding steady, it’s vital for today’s businesses to make the most of their current infrastructure. Fortunately, however, leveraging virtual infrastructure to enable cloud computing is possible without having to rip and replace the entire infrastructure. Whether an organization is replacing legacy technologies or adapting them to virtualization, Symantec and VMware have teamed up to help businesses make the transition to virtualization as smoothly as possible – with approximately 100 points of integration to date.

This integration effort goes beyond simply enabling the technologies to work together, to the IT users themselves. We have developed various integration levels ranging from...

The dramatic news that one of the U.K.’s leading financial services organisations had suffered a data outage that led to millions of customers unable to access their accounts should be a wake-up call for every CIO. The event tells them that their operation is entirely dependent on IT and in particular on the IT resources they have to run their systems.

It was once said that financial services can be thought of as a technology business with a financial domain of expertise. Whether or not that is the case, every bank—indeed every business—needs to have in place a watertight disaster recovery that ensures data is continuously available, whatever the scenario. As that major U.K. financial institution is now finding to its cost, the aftermath of a service stoppage can be...

For years businesses have had the desire to adopt new technologies ahead of competitors while avoiding the pains of early adoption of unproven technologies. It’s understandable that we have been hesitant to adopt cloud computing in particular. Many of us have been reluctant to put our business information in the hands of someone else, fearing what would happen in the event of a data breach or outage.

But cloud computing is no longer a new technology full of uncertainty. Many cloud providers have established track records of providing reliable, secure service and high availability, and if you haven’t already, it’s time to take stock of your current IT situation and consider how the cloud can help you....

It’s no secret that information is the prize in today’s war between businesses and cybercriminals. And just when organizations had come to terms with the fortress-style protection needed to keep information safe within the corporate walls, technology evolved to include virtualization and cloud. These advances provide increased business flexibility, improved scalability and can create significant cost savings, but they also increase your exposure to outside threats and therefore drive up risk. And, as if to make matters worse your InfoSec team has to figure out how to keep corporate data safe when it is being accessed out of the office on mobile devices, as well as ensuring the security of the virtualized data center which is highly dynamic in nature.

Symantec is teaming up with the leading virtualization provider VMware, to address some of the most pressing security issues affecting businesses globally as they take the step to virtualize more business critical...
