Survey: Despite Security Incidents, BYOD Worth The Risks

When it comes to mobile, BYOD is definitely here to stay. But, is it worth the risk? This year at Symantec Vision we wanted to better understand our customers’ perceptions of how personally owned mobile devices are used in their organization.  To do this, we conducted a survey of 236 attendees asking how their company is addressing BYOD, including risks, challenges, polices, usage and management of mobile devices. What we found is that while most organizations allow employees to use personal mobile devices for business purposes, they also accept that doing so will likely result in a mobile security incident. Survey...

RSA Show Floor Survey: Mobility making it easier for insiders to take IP

The show floor at RSA was buzzing with discussion of attacks against critical infrastructure and state-sponsored attacks – the words hactivist and A.P.T. were uttered frequently.  But, while cyber-espionage was making headlines from the show, Symantec took the opportunity to survey information security pros on insider issues related to data access and mobility. The findings show that although 76 percent of businesses saw cyberattacks in the past year, increased use of mobile devices is making the insider threat more relevant than ever before. It should come as no surprise that the top three motivators for the move to mobility are: business drivers, user demand and financial...

Early Adoption of Mobility Pays Off

Successful technology adoption requires managing the drawbacks while maximizing the benefits, and few trends today illustrate this better than mobility. We’re seeing a wide variety in the degree to which organizations are allowing employees to use mobile devices for business, as well as the amount of control they are exerting over devices and applications. To see the results of these different philosophies and determine how organizations can get the most out of their mobile deployment, Symantec surveyed more than 3,000 organizations, from SMBs to large enterprises. Innovators and Traditionals We asked the businesses about their level of involvement with mobility, and noted two distinct groups among the...

What Price Are You Paying for Mobility?

In today’s environment, most companies are looking for ways to improve the efficiency of their operations while keeping costs as low as possible. Technology is a great way to achieve that. However, some organizations make the mistake of introducing new technologies, without fully considering the effect they may have on the business. One potential risk is around mobility. Whether they are corporate- or employee-owned, letting employees work on smartphones and tablets can make them more productive. But we’re so busy looking at those benefits that we fail to notice what it’s costing us – and those costs are rising. A survey by...

Mobility and Cloud Computing Are Driving Information Sprawl

Symantec’s first State of Information report examined how organizations are dealing with information today, in light of significant changes in the data center. Symantec’s Digital Information Index sheds light on where information is being stored today, as well as some of the challenges that businesses are dealing with as a result of this transition in the way we store and access our information. Information is moving from traditional storage in data centers to devices outside of the corporate firewall. This new category of unorganized, duplicative information is referred to as “information sprawl.” Symantec’s Digital Information Index provides a barometer for information sprawl in different...

Disaster Preparedness Is Not at Odds with New Technology

One of the great challenges businesses face today is enabling productivity by giving people access to the resources they need, without compromising the safety of that information. And while it’s not always easy to see the risks, recent events have made it obvious that disaster can strike at any time, in many different ways. It’s vital for organizations of all sizes to have a plan in place to keep their business operational when things go wrong. Complicating the situation are several megatrends that are having a significant impact on IT today: namely, virtualization, cloud and mobility. These technologies are giving even small businesses the flexibility they need to compete better in a global market, but how are they affecting our ability to...

Symantec Continues to Lead the Industry in Enabling Secure Enterprise Mobility

By CJ Desai, senior vice president, Endpoint and Mobility Group, Symantec Symantec’s recent 2012 State of Mobility Survey found that organizations across the globe are embracing mobility at unprecedented rates, driven in part by the “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) movement. In fact, according to the survey, 59 percent of enterprises are now making line-of-business applications accessible from mobile devices, and another 71 percent are considering implementing a corporate mobile app store. So, just why are so many organizations gravitating towards mobility? Increased efficiency, increased workplace effectiveness and reduced time required to accomplish tasks are just some of the answers we hear from our customers. In short, the goal is better...
