Knowing Is Half the Battle for Today’s CISOs

By Joe Bertnick, Director of Product Management, Symantec Corp. On the battlefield, a general’s responsibility is to coordinate different bodies of soldiers whose commanders may not know what the others are doing. The complete picture of the battle only emerges when these individual reports can be combined and analyzed, yielding a strategy to ensure victory. Just as modern war has come to involve smaller bodies of soldiers carrying out specific missions, our security tools in the data center are addressing new and unique risks to different parts of the security ecosystem. In this world, the CISO is the general directing our overall efforts, merging the “in the trenches” technical details with the overall strategic direction of the business. And they need to be able to gather this intelligence anywhere, at any time, because security incidents aren’t limited to office hours. And while technology...

Avoiding the Hidden Costs of the Cloud

Businesses are adopting new technology at an unprecedented pace, and the cloud is one area where we’re making the most progress. And by now it’s clear that the cloud provides significant advantages to businesses, improving agility and reducing costs. But there is a darker side as well that organizations may overlook – hidden costs of cloud implementation that can negate the benefits if not properly contained. The 2013 Symantec Avoiding the Hidden Costs of Cloud Survey reveals some of these unanticipated challenges businesses face as they look to take advantage of today’s efficient cloud solutions. The businesses surveyed showed that, compared to a year ago, cloud adoption is seeing significant progress. In fact, 90 percent of them are now at least discussing the cloud, an increase from 75 percent a year before. But at the same, cloud computing presents its own set of challenges, and industry experts anticipate that security issues and outages will...

Big Data = Better Decision Making = Better Security

When the words “big data” and “security” are used together in a sentence, usually the word “problem” or “concern” is in there too. Security is often thought of as a prohibitor to using big data, since data of all types – including confidential – are being mixed together to generate analytics which can be used for better decision making. But while there are concerns, big data can actually be harnessed to improve security. The job of the defender is to protect against an infinite number of attacks. However, a defender will always have a limited amount of resources with which to do this. The real job of the security practitioner is to prioritize remediation efforts by risk, so that the limited resources can be focused on addressing the greatest risks to the business. Most security organizations have anywhere between five and hundreds of different security technologies deployed in their enterprise environments....

    Security in the Cloud

It’s no secret that information is the prize in today’s war between businesses and cybercriminals. And just when organizations had come to terms with the fortress-style protection needed to keep information safe within the corporate walls, technology evolved to include virtualization and cloud. These advances provide increased business flexibility, improved scalability and can create significant cost savings, but they also increase your exposure to outside threats and therefore drive up risk. And, as if to make matters worse your InfoSec team has to figure out how to keep corporate data safe when it is being accessed out of the office on mobile devices, as well as ensuring the security of the virtualized data center which is highly dynamic in nature. Symantec is teaming up with the leading virtualization provider VMware, to address some of the most pressing security issues affecting businesses globally as they take the step to virtualize more business critical...
