Here are a few tips and tricks that might come in handy as you get started on Symantec Connect.

Profile - Located under the "Me" menu item, in the upper right hand corner of the site, you can upload a photo, keep track of your rewards points  and customize your subscriptions to community newsletters.  Just select the "edit" tab within your profile and start customizing.

Private Messages - To send another user a private message click on the user name, and then select "send this user a message."

Notifications - Keep track of a thread you started, a post of interest or a topic by selecting "Subscriptions" when posting a new forum discussion or comment.  Subscriptions are also available in other sections of Connect (i.e. articles, blogs, videos, downloads, events and ideas).  You can even...

User Facing: Desktop

  • Added the ability to subscribe to be notified of new posts in a target forum. How? Navigate to a post in the target forum, click the "subscriptions (0)" link at the bottom of the post, then check the "Posts in the [forum name] forum" checkbox.
  • Added the ability to filter search results on the group(s) that the post was posted in.
  • Added the ability to search for products by using their acronyms. Searching for "DS", for example, will now return results for "Altiris Deployment Solution."
  • Added a permission that allows members of the Security Response blog team to edit any SR blog post -- in addition to their own blog posts.
  • Added the ability for Connect admins to add badges to Connect and to award those badges -- for special achievements -- to deserving users.
  • Modified the "Language settings" drop down on the user profile pages to only list languages...

I release regular updates to some of my downloads, article or blog posts (depending on the content or my mood) as this is much easier to keep track of for users and myself.

However there is a certain delay between updating content on connect (on https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect) and when the content is available to non-members of the community.

So in case you are not yet a member of Connect and wonder why I keep push blog post that annonce new version and you can't find them - then the answer is sign-in, or sign-up, and you'll go the latest and greatest as soon as it hits Connect :D

A recent Nielsen® study shows that smartphone  usage in teenagers alone has nearly tripled over the last two years.  The article quotes “In the teen study, Google's® Android™ operating system led the way with 36 percent of the teen smart-phone market owning Android-based phones, according to ComScore™.  Apple® iPhones followed with 29 percent, and RIM®’s BlackBerry™ phones were third, with 23.8 percent.”  The core benefits of Android – open, free and downloadable apps from many resources – also attract countless mobile malware authors to proliferate malware via apps that superficially seem harmless.

If you've ever posted a question or looked for a solution in the Backup and Storage communities, chances are good that you have crossed paths with Trusted Advisor Marianne Van Den Berg. Recently Marianne reached 1,000 solutions--an amazing milestone, and one that we're considerably proud of her for reaching. Marianne is a fabulous asset to the Symantec Connect community. She lives west of Johannesburg in sunny South Africa, close to her grown-up son and daughter and is a new grandmother! She loves gardening, photography, getting out into nature. We're not sure when she does this however, as she gives a wealth of information and support around the clock. Join us in thanking Marianne for all she does.

We will be holding a two-day workshop on Symantec's Mountain View campus to help determine the future direction of Symantec Connect. We'd love to invite you, our users to be a part of this workshop.  To be considered for this workshop, we have some pretty distinct characteristics we're looking for.

Does this sound like you?

  • Part of a small or medium-sized business with fewer than 500 employees
  • Living in the Silicon Valley area
  • Willing and able to spend 2 days on the Symantec campus during May (exact dates TBD) sharing your Connect experiences during a two-day collaborative workshop
  • A registered user of Symantec Connect and familiar with the Connect community
  • Willing to work as part of a team environment (i.e. share your thoughts and opinions, listen to other's ideas, works well with others)
  • Using at least one, if not more Symantec products in your organization's environment

Introducing  Symantec Connect for Your Mobile Device

Symantec Connect users have been requesting better mobile accessibility to Connect, and we’re excited to announce that we’ve recently launched the Connect mobile site. This site has been designed to allow users worldwide to access all of the great content on Connect when they are away from their computer!

Users can browse forums, blogs and articles; view videos; and search for specific topics. In addition, users can participate on Connect by making comments on content, uploading their own blog entry, idea, or forum discussion topic--all from a simplified and streamlined interface.

You can experience Connect mobile for yourself simply by accessing Symantec Connect from your mobile device. Connect automatically identifies the device you’re using and serves you the mobile site.  The mobile site developers worked tirelessly to ensure the best browsing experience...

How do I access the mobile site?

Access www.symantec.com/connect. Connect automatically identifies the device you’re using and serves you the mobile site if you are using a recognized mobile device.

What can tasks can I complete on my mobile device?

  • Browsing content
  • Searching content
  • Making comments on content
  • Creating your own blog entry, idea, or forum discussion topic

What devices support the mobile site?

We tested the mobile site on the most recent versions of iOS, Android and Blackberry. Due to the large number of devices we cannot test all of them. We tested using the native browsers on each device. Also, please be aware that the interface may look slightly different depending on the device you are using.

Symantec can confirm that the source code for 2006 versions of Norton Antivirus posted by Anonymous is authentic.  The exposure of this code poses no increased risk to Norton or Symantec customers.  This code is part of the original cache of code for 2006 versions of the products that Anonymous has claimed to possess over the last  few weeks.  We anticipated that the code would be posted.  As we have already stated publicly, our analysis shows that due to the age of the exposed code, Symantec antivirus or endpoint security consumer and business customers – including anyone running Norton products – should not be in any increased danger of cyber attacks resulting from this incident.  We also anticipate that Anonymous will post the rest of the code they have claimed to have in their possession.
