2010 has been a good year for NetBackup.  We launched the first hardware appliances with the NetBackup 5000 and 5200, launched our cloud storage program with Nirvanix and started integrating with Enterprise Vault (the #1 archive software on the market).  We're planning to continue the momentum of all of these in the new year.

If 2010 was the year where Symantec entered the appliance business, 2011 will be where it goes big.  You can imagine that since we based our hardware on PureDisk and NetBackup Media Servers that we have a few other software products that could benefit from a best-in-class optimized hardware platform.  We're planning to do that in in this next year as well as taking the existing 5000 and 5200 and scaling those up to larger capacities.  Providing hardware has been a totally different route to deliver software...

NetBackup 5000: Moving Information Management Forward

As you may have seen, today (Sept. 7) Symantec announced the release of Enterprise Vault 9.0 and the NetBackup 5000 appliance.  On the Enterprise Vault side, our customers have been very eagerly awaiting both the Exchange 2010 SP1 support (roughly co-sync with MSFT!) and the new Discovery Collector offering.  In the world of data protection, I’ve heard great things from our beta testers and early adopters of the NetBackup 5000 … especially for speed of configuration, ease of deployment, and performance.  What, performance too?  Yes, it’s ripping fast!

Moving and Expiring Your Stuff

I’ve never meant anybody who likes to move.  I just did it and I’m in the club.  Moving = Not Fun.  It’s not just packing.  It’s the rebound. The unpacking at your destination really kills you.  To avoid early death by moving, I’ve simply left much of it in boxes, in the garage.  I don’t need a lot of my stuff on a daily basis, much less monthly basis.  Now I’m ready to throw it out, but what about recycling? 

To my surprise recycling some things in the bay area, epicenter for many green initiatives, is not easy as you might think. I’m not talking about your 27” TV from 1990.  I’m talking about basic stuff - packing material – the stuff they use to protect precious electronics or new furniture. Information Protection Survey (Symantec Enterprise Vault / NetBackup)

The Symantec Enterprise Vault and NetBackup Product Management Teams are conducting customer research in support of our product integration planning.  The first part of this research effort is 4 page web survey (see below).  This online survey is designed to collect some relevant customer environment and satisfaction/outlook data.  We would like to get as many NetBackup and Enterprise Vault customers as possible to complete the survey so that we have a comprehensive data set, and also to leverage these responses in recruiting for our 2nd wave of research (customer “interviews”) and possibly other related follow-up discussions.

Engineering Firm Turns to Symantec to Meet Backup and Recovery Needs

Growth is a problem lots of companies would like to be dealing with right now. But it isn’t always easy to manage growth, especially growing your IT infrastructure to keep up with a fast-growing business.

This was a problem facing ENGlobal, an engineering firm that provides services to the energy sector. ENGlobal has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, both organically and through acquisitions.  As a result of this growth, the company ENGlobal had outsourced its backup operations to couldn’t keep up, causing backup costs to increase by 50 percent.
