PostgreSQL (commonly referred to as Postgres) is a powerful, open source object-relational database system. It is used by several prominent users including the International Space Station, Skype, Reddit, and Yahoo!

In a blog post last year, Backing up the Dolphins, we had announced support for backup of MySQL via NetBackup. I'm happy to now be able to announce the availability of a Postgres Agent for NetBackup, certified and available from Zmanda, our STEP partner and a specialist in backing up open source databases.

NetBackup 7.1.0.3 (NetBackup 7.1 Maintenance Release 3) is now available!

I'm very pleased to announce that a new Maintenance Release for NetBackup 7.1 is now available!

NetBackup 7.1.0.3 is the third maintenance release on NetBackup 7.1.  This release contains several new proliferations as listed below:

  • Support for vSphere5
  • Support for SharePoint 2010 SP1 and Exchange 2010 SP2
  • Client support for Mac 10.7
  • Master and media support for AIX 7.1
  • NBSL changes to gather hardware information from appliance media servers attached to NBU7.1.x master servers

Along with above mentioned proliferations, several customer issues and internal engineering defects were fixed covering:

  • Resolution of Deduplication issues around data inconsistency, stream handler, GRT and high memory consumption during backups
  • Resolution of performance issues experienced by customers in BMR pre-restore environment since 7.0.X

I'm very pleased to announce that a new Maintenance Release for NetBackup 7.1 is now available!

In addition to many bug fixes, NetBackup 7.1.0.2 contains several changes that can improve restore performance and rehydration performance. This feature offers the following enhancements:

  • Rehydration improvements for deduplicated files
  • Environmental factors that affect rehydration performance
  • Changes and updates to the deduplication tuning parameters that affect restore performance and rehydration performance
  • Editing the ReadBufferSize parameter
  • NetBackup tuning

Today, MySQL powers some of the largest websites in the world.  If you are storing production data in MySQL, having a formalized and tested MySQL backup strategy and implementation is crucial.  I can't tell you how many times I have been asked when NetBackup will support live backups of MySQL, but I do know it's happened a lot!  That's why I am delighted to announce that now, we can tell you that we DO have that support.  We worked with Zmanda (www.zmanda.com), a well known MySQL backup specialist - AND a Symantec STEP Partner! - to create a MySQL agent for NetBackup which is now available!

Introducing the NetBackup Screencast Demonstration Video Series

The NetBackup Screencast Demonstration Videos are a group of short videos designed to demonstrate specific functions and procedures within NetBackup. They have been produced by Symantec NetBackup Product Support to help you get the most out of your NetBackup environment.

The initial focus of the NetBackup Screencast Demo Video series is the NetBackup Agent for Microsoft Exchange.  Thirty-four videos have been produced detailing a variety of topics including:

  • How to configure various backup scenarios for Exchange within NetBackup (such as DAG backups, CCR backups, etc.)
  • How to perform various restore scenarios for Exchange within NetBackup (to RSGs, Alternate clients, etc.)
  • Special topics such as Exclude list usage
