Could you obliterate your backup window problems with 100x faster backups?  What if your car company called you up and told you that with a software upgrade you could make your car accelerate 100x faster.  What if the county or province where you live told you that your daily trip to work or the grocery store would be 100x faster in the coming months.  A new feature in the next release of NetBackup is expected to deliver just this type of massive leap in performance.

Symantec first gave a hint about this feature, which will be called NetBackup Accelerator, back at our US Vision conference in 2011 (read the press release here), where we announced our intention to break the backup window and provide customers with a plan to modernize data protection....

Symantec NetBackup Customer Wins Dell Ultimate Home Computer System Give-away at Vision Conference!

Last week’s Symantec Vision conference was abuzz with customers attending a range of sessions – those that attended sessions focused on virtualization, the heart of Symantec V-Ray -- were automatically entered into a raffle to win the “ULTIMATE HOME OFFICE” prize. This prize included the Dell Alienware High Performance Gaming system, 4 30-inch HD monitors, and more!

The  winner, Deborah, an IT architect (and a NetBackup user), was thrilled to win: “I am so excited! Vision has been a great conference for me, being able to get face time with real product experts and hands on experience with Symantec products. Winning this prize has made this week even better!”

What is Symantec V-ray, you ask? Simply put, it’s Visibility for Virtual environments.  ...

At the recent NetBackup customer forum, I had the opportunity to talk to some engineers about a very cool new utility called NBDNA – NetBackup Domain Networker Analyzer.  Given the frequency with which network changes, not made by the backup administrator, affect backups, I thought this tool sounded very cool.  The command utility analyzes the NetBackup domain and its configuration for network issues, performance, and behavior. It addresses hostname lookup and connectivity between NetBackup hosts and their role within the NetBackup domain.

NBDNA does the following:

  • Discovers and maps the NetBackup domain
  • Extracts the hostname memberships by querying the configuration
  • Evaluates hostname lookup and socket connectivity to these hostnames to validate their network relationship status according to their domain configuration

NBDNA can be run on a NetBackup master server or media server. It creates and identifies a zip...

I’ve never meant anybody who likes to move.  I just did it and I’m in the club.  Moving = Not Fun.  It’s not just packing.  It’s the rebound. The unpacking at your destination really kills you.  To avoid early death by moving, I’ve simply left much of it in boxes, in the garage.  I don’t need a lot of my stuff on a daily basis, much less monthly basis.  Now I’m ready to throw it out, but what about recycling?

To my surprise recycling some things in the bay area, epicenter for many green initiatives, is not easy as you might think. I’m not talking about your 27” TV from 1990.  I’m talking about basic stuff - packing material – the stuff they use to protect precious electronics or new furniture. Turns out those large pieces of foam (aka Styrofoam or technically called expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) are not so easy to recycle.  And it’s not good for the...

George Crump recently wrote a post on Byte & Switch on source-side deduplication.  I thought an expansion on the topic would be useful given that George did not cover all the facts in his post.  Yes, I’m writing from a Symantec perspective, but my intention is to present a balanced and factual argument.

Do you have to switch backup applications for integrated deduplication?  NetBackup integrated its PureDisk deduplication engine into the NetBackup server to give customer the choice about how and where they perform deduplication.  As a result, there’s no need to replace the client on your existing machine if you’re already using NetBackup.

Does switching to source-side deduplication...

Jon Toigo writes a blog call Drunken Data.  He recently put out a call for dedupe vendors to answer a few questions.  You can read some of the unedited vendor submissions, including one for our own product NetBackup PureDisk.  I am happy to post it here if anyone finds it too difficult to read through the blog.

The response are different then what you might read in standard datasheet / collateral material.  Indeed, it's the contrast of response where you'll find the silver lining.

Finally, a blurb posted from SearchDataBackup.com, by Dave Rafino "Storage Decisions: Users list must-have data dedupe options" where users sounded off on data dedupe. If you're feeling lazy, I'll net it out for you.

1) Dedupe savings are real...

Stephen Bigelow, of SearchDataBackup.com (or TechTarget) posted a brief article entitled "How to Upgrade or Replace Backup Software".  Stephen raised some good points which can be summarized as follows - "make sure to invest in a backup platform that supports next generation technologies" such as VMware, encryption, and data deduplication.  Needless to say, for larger enterprises or those with heterogeneous environments I would advocate upgrading to the NetBackup Platform to address current and future needs

Curious to know more about the NetBackup Platform?  I suggest a skim of this NetBackup Platform whitepaper.  I don't what to repeat in a...
