I love good news first thing in the morning.

IDC's quarterly Storage SoftwareTracker reportcame out and the news was great, at least for us. "Symantec's 26.9 percent overall storagesoftware marketshare growth nearly doubled that of the overall storagesoftware marketgrowth due to strong demand of its innovative solutions, includingNetBackup, Backup Exec and Storage Foundation." - Symantec Demonstrates Market Leadership in Storage Software

Good work team.

I meant to blog daily at the Customer Forum, but I was having too much fun and spent a few too many hours in the office.

Here are a few tidbits that stuck out in my mind.

De-dupe is still red hot in the marketplace. You could look at Data Domain's earnings and understand what I am talking about. The customers are excited about the technology and our approaches and there is a lot still going on in this space.

People are still hungry for the basics to be simpler and easier to use. We are working on that and were able to show some "sneak peeks". The enthusiasm was even better than I expected. I can't wait to start unveiling more of it in public.

It was clearer than ever that thin provisioning isn't just for disks it also for the people. The same person wears the hat of SAN administrator, backup architect, troubleshooter, deployment guru and titles too numerous to name.

So what am I hoping to get out of the event?

I am hoping to see if people like the neat UI stuff we are doing. Since the improvements we are making...

The interesting thing about the people in the training is that most of them here are very young - late 20's to early 30's.  We're seeing more of that in the storage industry but usually I'm the really young guy in the room when it comes to industry events (props to Dan, Mayur, Erica, Lou, Stefaan, Matt and few other fellow youngins).  These people in Dubai though are coming up with all sorts of neat ways to use NetBackup to protect people.  Leveraging integration with the Storage Foundation file system + volume manager, teaming it up with Enterprise Vault archiving, using PureDisk deduplication on the backend for storage or on the front end for remote office, and rolling it all up for reporting in Backup Reporter. It made me see again that this is what make's NBU as a part of Symantec so different than anyone else - to offer a solution across all these areas without having a piece that's not as good (like a crummy archive portion or a single platform file system)....

It should only take about 15 minutes to complete.  We’ll use the data to support our planning and testing efforts.  Each NetBackup user who takes the survey before October 31st will receive a free one-year subscription to Norton 360.

Thanks in advance!

I was shopping at a shoe store recently for a new pair of dress shoes, and finally found what I was looking for and brought my purchase to a counter. "Don't you know about our 2-for-1 deal?" the woman at the counter asked me. "With this purchase, you could buy a second pair of shoes for only $5 more."

I mulled it over and realized that I really had no need for a second pair of shoes. The temptation was there, for sure - what a deal! But I've been actively trying to reduce the clutter in my home, and I really needed only a replacement pair of shoes - not to augment my otherwise-sufficient collection.

Many two-for-1 deals get you an extra set of something that you don't really need. But I've been surprised to discover recently that, despite a great deal of effort to describe our product (bolstered by Symantec's powerful marketing machine), many of our customers don't realize that NetBackup for VMware even has a 2-for-1 deal going.

This...

Times have changed a lot since then.

Customers who were once thrilled to replace a ton of individual backup scriptswith a standard automatic solution are now are...

And I'm not just talking about the vibrant visuals at the VMworld party, or the visceral visual experience of Danica Patrick (the car racing superstar) within feet of me as she kicked off the party.  No, what I'm talking about was the vindication of NetBackup winning a slot in the Best of VMworld awards in the Data Protection category for the second year in a row. Why vindication? Because for over a year, we've been telling our customers that we had industry-leading technology. Victorious yet again, NetBackup's 3rd party validation lent credence to the claims we have been making. And verily, that deserve some van-fare.

Joe "Blue Man"Joe has been prepping for our Customer Forum taking place in October, here in Minnesota. This doesn’t just mean honing his message and PowerPoint slides. Joe doesn’t just take on a role in our organization; he throws his entire body into a role.

If you don’t know why Joe is wearing pair of large footie pajamas, you probably aren’t a NetBackup administrator.

Joe is prepping for an appearance as the NetBackup "blue guy", the icon that appears in Activity Monitor when a job completes successfully.
