I drove past my local, soon to be former, Blockbuster store this weekend. Everything is now 80% off, including the store fixtures. It is the last one to go as there used to be three (3) Blockbusters in a two mile radius of my house. In its day, Blockbuster ruled the video rental business. However, consumer demand changed, new companies emerged to meet those changing demands, Blockbuster was not able to change, and today Blockbuster is offering 80% off store fixtures.

Have you ever wondered if your appliance issues can be resolved even before they appear at your end? ( i.e a system that proactively monitors your appliances and automates issue resolution.)  Symantec is committed to simplifying and improving support experiences for its customers. Built on the service automation strategy, Symantec AutoSupport framework provides proactive and automated support services to its appliance customers.

Starting February 4, Symantec Secure Operations Center ( SOC), an integral part of AutoSupport, began monitoring backup appliances all over the world, processing the alerts received from Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec appliances, creating support tickets with field services for hardware related issues and Enterprise Support Services for non-hardware related issues. I'm very pleased to announce that the next Release Update for NetBackup 52x0 Appliances is now available!

NetBackup 5200/5220 Appliances 2.5.2 Release Update is the equivalent Appliance patch release to NetBackup 7.5.0.5.

It is a cumulative release containing fixes and content from 7.5.0.1 through 7.5.0.4. In addition, this release contains an additional 400 fixes (bringing the total fixes in 7.5.0.5 to over 1100!) including the most commonly downloaded EEBs, several customer escalations, and internal engineering defects.

In addition to including all of the fixes in NetBackup 7.5.0.5, Appliance 2.5.2 contains:  

  • Improvements in Hardware Supportability
    • More resource status & usage monitoring
    • Way to acknowledge alerts
    • Monitor behavioral patterns in MSDP
    • Bug fixes/EEBs specific to SORT/Call home

One of the things that weigh on an IT director’s mind is how he/she can keep up with their company’s growth in the data center. These areas include server growth, application growth, bandwidth and network growth, and just as important, data growth.  In addition, how do they keep all that up with limited budget, both from a CapEx and OpEx perspective? 

In the real world, the amount of money spent dictates scalability, because as the items I mentioned grow within the data center and beyond, the cost grows at an accelerated rate.  The reason is because every piece of hardware/infrastructure added affects the growth of the network, storage, server capacity, resource utilization, etc.  It’s like the ripple effect of tossing a pebble into a still pond.   This makes real-life scalability follow the red line in the graph below.  What the green line represents is if the cost per added data center piece always stayed the same, and...

  I have worked for NetBackup Technical Support as a Staff engineer for long time. Customers don’t call us when things are working great; they need our help when they are not getting what they want from the product. Naturally, a seasoned engineer in support is continuously dealing with weaknesses or defects in the product more than its strengths.

  Recently, I watched a demo of protecting virtual machines using a competitor’s product. This product’s primary backup server (equivalent to a NetBackup master server) runs only on Windows. The product installation setup screen reminded me of Windows 3.1 installation back in 90s during my high school days. What a nostalgic feeling! It prompts the user for a few inputs, goes and copies a few files, comes back and asks a few other questions, then it does something else and so on. It also prompted for reboots a couple of times. Providing a sound disaster recovery (DR) strategy is important for any company to avoid the risk of downtime and lost $$$.  Smart businesses usually have some sort of mirroring, replication or clustering technology in place to keep mission critical applications and tier 1 servers up and running and always available.  But what about DR for the customer’s backup infrastructure? Backup and recovery is looked at as a non-revenue generating “insurance” policy for a company, and has no real business value.  That is, until you lose everything and rely on that backed up data to bring your company back to life.  With that sobering thought in mind, should a DR strategy be considered for backups?

Pushing the Life Expectancy of Media Servers; Saving or Costing you Money? 

Are you “penny wise, pound foolish” with your servers? This expression came to mind from a recent IDC report1, Server Refresh Cycles:  The Costs of Extending Life Cycles1. The article stresses that “extending the life of servers too long can lead to an increase in operational expenses that could pay for investments in new technology.” In other words, spend the money to invest in a new server, and it will pay for itself from the increased operational costs that you avoid keeping your current servers up and running.  While the report addresses x86 servers, I thought it was very relevant to backup media servers and Symantec Backup Appliances. In the Backup and Recovery world, there’s no shortage of acronyms and buzzwords used to refer to spending and savings.  CapEx, OpEx, TCO, ROI, etc…every vendor will use these to make their solutions seem more attractive from a cost perspective. However, when you dig a little deeper into how a product is installed, maintained and more importantly, upgraded, you can start to see where hidden costs are, and maybe that attractive “Total Cost of Ownership” you discussed back when you first purchased the product, isn’t that pretty anymore.

Upgrading and expanding your backup software’s footprint to meet your ever growing data center comes at a cost.  This is an expense that is often overlooked when the initial purchase takes place.  A product may seem less expensive than other competitors up front, but as the old saying goes, “the Devil’s in the details”.
