I was trying to think of which crazy-cool complex report I could post on the blog but it dawned on me that there is a lot of power in just the simple reports. So that's where I'll start. Here's a dead simple report that simply shows how much you've backed up each day for the last month. Think of it as the report that you want everyone in IT to have so if you were to stop someone in the hallway and ask "how much data did we backup last night?" They would have the answer at the tip of their tongue. Sounds simple enough but if you really dig down there is a lot of complexity under this report. You’re environment may be several backup domains (NBU Masters), thousands of clients, dozens of applications, multiple geographies, and so on. But here all that stuff is one simple blue bar for each day.

When I am out meeting customers I sometimes run into questions about the Symantec Authentication Service. This often occurs in the context of a conversation about Veritas Backup Reporter, NetBackup Access Control, NetBackup Operations Manager or other Symantec products using the same infrastructure. The first resource I usually point out is the Symantec Yellow book called, "Symantec Product Authentication and Authorization". The book does a great job of explaining how authentication and authorization work and also explains how you should configure it. In addition I suggest I suggest taking a look at the "...

I’ve been involved with several projects related to NetBackup reporting over the years. In each of those projects I have heard customers voice a concern about producing a report that tells them conclusively that their clients are protected.

It sounds like a very simple report to produce. I wish it were always simple.

Let’s look at a few of the gory details. First, which client list is canonical?

  • All clients who are currently included in a NetBackup policy?
  • All clients who have had a backup in the past have data retained in the NetBackup catalog?
  • All clients who have had a job run during a certain time period.

Choosing any of the lists of clients has its issues. In an ideal world the lists above would all be the same. In reality they overlap, but rarely match 100%. For example, the act of de-commissioning a server may result in a ticket to remove the client from a policy, but backup images may remain on tape...

When I got out of school at the University of Minnesota a few years ago I had a bunch of friends that went off to California where they worked for dot com’s or other little startups.  Some were successful, others not.  Almost all of my friends though thought I was crazy for becoming an engineer on a piece of software that used predominately tape drives for storage at the time (and this was 2004).  For a long time I was forced to explain how modern tape media had larger capacity or faster streaming write speeds than hard disks.  Luckily NetBackup 6.5 has changed that with all its disk features so now I spend my time explaining what neat things we can do with disk.

But that’s not why I’m writing.  A couple of months ago I made a move from NetBackup to Veritas Backup Reporter.  VBR (the name most people refer to Backup Reporter as) has been a result of several internal projects and external products but is largely based on a...

Hi, my name is Tim Burlowski. I am a technical product manager and I work in the NetBackup product management group. If you are wondering, I am certainly not the "new sheriff."

I've worked at Symantec for almost 10 years. The last ten years have been a long strange trip to say the least.

When I first started working on NetBackup the initial configuration was not for the faint of heart. One of the first tasks I was given was performing some release testing for NetBackup 3.11. I was given a sheet of paper with directions for remotely mounting a tape and installing client software from that tape. I had to find an AIX server, mount the 8mm tape and then install a client across the network from a Solaris system. I recall that it all worked by the way, but it would be generous and kind to describe the process as anything...

Hello and welcome to the inaugural blog from the NetBackup team!

This blog is run by a group of NetBackup professionals from Symantec.  Each offers a unique perspective and opinions on enterprise data protection and the Veritas NetBackup Platform of backup and recovery products.  Please have a look and feel free to chime in with your thoughts too. Thanks for stopping by.
