Pop Quiz: The Enterprise Backup and Recovery software market is:

  1. Dramatic

  2. Controversial

  3. In the Midst of an Upheaval

  4. All of the Above

Yep. This year the industry analysts are acknowledging the most interesting dynamic that we’ve observed in all of the years that we’ve been in the data protection space. But unfortunately, some publications still missed the mark on a major trend in the evolution of this market space. Here’s why I think so.

Ultimately, all of us in the industry are biased participants – hey, I’m one of them. But the inarguable test for success comes down to customers voting with their wallets. And that measurement is defined by revenue and units, and it is applied to a new, parallel backup market space called Integrated Appliances.

Combining software and hardware into a dedicated function appliance is not a new thing. Fifteen years ago all-in-one small office devices...

The growth trajectory of Symantec’s backup appliance business demonstrates that customers believe in our vision and the value of our solutions. IDC tracks the backup appliance market and calls it the Purpose Built Backup Appliance (PBBA) market. Over the last 3 years, Symantec went from 0% market share to 38% in the Integrated PBBA segment.  The graph of this growth also suggests that Symantec could be the market share leader for integrated backup appliances in the next 2-3 years.

Integrated PBBA 3yr_0.png

The other surprise in the graph above is why other major backup providers such as CommVault or IBM TSM are not offering their own purpose-built, integrated appliances. Our decision to introduce integrated backup appliances three years ago reflects our continuous focus on reducing complexity, driving down costs, and enabling greater IT agility.

Nutanix is a hyper-converged infrastructure solution where each node is a self-sufficient set of compute and storage resources to run workloads. Four Nutanix nodes form a Nutanix Block. Multiple Nutanix Blocks can be acquired for pooling compute and storage. Nutanix follows ‘shared nothing’ architecture for storage. While storage from multiple nodes are pooled and presented as a single name space, data locality is ensured as much as possible with the use of a service VM on each node that keeps hot data on server flash and moves cold data to hard drives. Making data copies on other nodes in the cluster ensures availability. For a simple visual on Nutanix architecture, I recommend watching this video

One of the most popular use cases of Nutanix is to run VMware vSphere. How do you backup workloads on VMware vSphere if they are running on Nutanix platform?

Just like any other platform for hosting VMware vSphere,...

Functional IT professionals value technical training. Whether you are new to the industry and looking to start from the basics, someone who has experience in a competing solution and switching to Symantec solution or someone trying to evaluate a solution that is best suited for company business needs, a technical architect is comfortable to make an informed decision if he/she can actually get technical information easily. He/she may not be interested in a sales pitch; the appetite there is really for the true technical capabilities and operations.

Unlike some vendors in the market who hide even product documentation unless you have already bought the product, Symantec had always made it available online. There is nothing to hide from the public when most...

Join Symantec NetBackup experts for a Twitter Chat on Friday, July 25 at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET to talk about the challenges of scaling enterprise data protection in the software-defined data center (SDDC).

Enterprises need a data protection solution capable of handling the large-scale heterogeneous environment of today, combined with the future virtual and software-defined environments of tomorrow – where petabytes of data and thousands of virtual machines are the expectation rather than the exception. But how do you select which solution is up to the task?

On Monday July 7th Symantec announced the release of NetBackup 5230 and 5220 expanded capacity.

While this may seem like another product “speeds and feeds” announcement, it is more than that. I believe there are three (3) reasons why this release is significant:

  • Confirms Symantec’s commitment to NetBackup and NetBackup appliances.

  • Validates Symantec as a leading integrated backup appliance.

  • Delivers investment protection to our customers.

Don’t get me wrong, increasing the capacity is important, but the underlying message of “why this matters” is even more important.

Our Commitment to NetBackup Appliances

I started with Symantec and NetBackup appliances a little more than three (3) years ago. Back then, it seemed the competition was constantly throwing FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) as Symantec was “only a software company”, and “not in appliances for...

Backup is like an insurance policy. You want it for the peace of mind, but you don’t want it to dominate your workday (also, nights and weekends!). You need to protect data on your virtual machines to guard against hardware/storage failures and user errors. You may also have regulatory and compliance requirements to protect data for the longer term.

VMware made virtual machine data protection easy for administrators by introducing vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP). VADP is a set of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) made available by VMware for backup software vendors. These APIs make it possible for backup software vendors to embed the intelligence needed to protect virtual machines by integrating with vSphere. Through these APIs, the backup software can create snapshots of virtual machines and copy those to backup storage.

My previous blog spoke to the concept of an "Agile Data Center," a model that customers tell us represents their future. Most organizations sit in some (or many) parts of it and are searching to move from the circles to the center.

What does it mean to get the right resources to the right users in the right way? Last week at Symantec Vision 2014 in Las Vegas we introduced this concept for the first time, and expanded on it with some hard examples.

Together with Intel, VMware, NetApp, Biomni, Microsoft, as well as some of our own products, we elaborated on the way elastic resources, delivery-as-a-service and IT intelligence can...
