Pop Quiz: The Enterprise Backup and Recovery software market is:

  1. Dramatic

  2. Controversial

  3. In the Midst of an Upheaval

  4. All of the Above

Yep. This year the industry analysts are acknowledging the most interesting dynamic that we’ve observed in all of the years that we’ve been in the data protection space. But unfortunately, some publications still missed the mark on a major trend in the evolution of this market space. Here’s why I think so.

Ultimately, all of us in the industry are biased participants – hey, I’m one of them. But the inarguable test for success comes down to customers voting with their wallets. And that measurement is defined by revenue and units, and it is applied to a new, parallel backup market space called Integrated Appliances.

Combining software and hardware into a dedicated function appliance is not a new thing. Fifteen years ago all-in-one small office devices...

The growth trajectory of Symantec’s backup appliance business demonstrates that customers believe in our vision and the value of our solutions. IDC tracks the backup appliance market and calls it the Purpose Built Backup Appliance (PBBA) market. Over the last 3 years, Symantec went from 0% market share to 38% in the Integrated PBBA segment.  The graph of this growth also suggests that Symantec could be the market share leader for integrated backup appliances in the next 2-3 years.

The other surprise in the graph above is why other major backup providers such as CommVault or IBM TSM are not offering their own purpose-built, integrated appliances. Our decision to introduce integrated backup appliances three years ago reflects our continuous focus on reducing complexity, driving down costs, and enabling greater IT agility.

Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) servers unify computing, networking, management, virtualization, and storage access into a single integrated architecture. This unique architecture enables end-to-end server visibility, management, and control in both bare metal and virtual environments. As you guys might remember, Symantec NetBackup is the first and only enterprise backup solution to achieve Cisco’s official Interoperability Verification Testing (IVT) certification for its superior scale and agility to protect workloads on both virtual and bare metal configurations.

Whether you are deploying UCS with your own choices of storage or consuming it as part of popular converged infrastructure solutions like NetApp FlexPod or VCE VBLOCK, there is more great news for Cisco UCS customers. Symantec NetBackup now announces protection for Cisco UCS service profiles thereby enabling end-to-end coverage for UCS based data center across bare-...

Last week we made a shocking revelation. The storage snapshot integration from Competitor ‘C’ barely meets the RPOs that are already achievable in NetBackup Accelerator where operationally expensive storage integration is not required. In terms of solution implementation, we were comparing apples and oranges. Now it is time to compare apples to apples.

Well, it is time to break more news. While Competitor ‘C’ is trying to position itself as the spokesperson of snapshot management, the engineering details are nowhere close to what marketing tends to spit out. The glistering messages are just a cover for poorly designed integration that defeats the very purpose of why someone should use snapshots in the first place. NetBackup Replication Director beats Competitor ‘C’, securing an impressive score of 16:1 for a workload...

Data protection is to meet recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs) of an organization’s information. Traditional wisdom states that mission critical applications require data protection methods delivering superior RPO (the less is the amount of data lost during recovery) and RTO (the faster to recover). A data protection solution may provide one of more methods to deliver different tiers of RPOs and RTOs.

In general, methods for establishing RPOs and RTOs improve in the following order…

Streaming backups < storage snapshots < continuous data protection

This is the story of a vendor promoting themselves as the advocates of storage snapshots. Symantec’s social media policy teaches me to be discreet and respectful of the competition. Hence let me refer to this vendor as Competitor ‘C’.

This Competitor ‘C...

Nutanix is a hyper-converged infrastructure solution where each node is a self-sufficient set of compute and storage resources to run workloads. Four Nutanix nodes form a Nutanix Block. Multiple Nutanix Blocks can be acquired for pooling compute and storage. Nutanix follows ‘shared nothing’ architecture for storage. While storage from multiple nodes are pooled and presented as a single name space, data locality is ensured as much as possible with the use of a service VM on each node that keeps hot data on server flash and moves cold data to hard drives. Making data copies on other nodes in the cluster ensures availability. For a simple visual on Nutanix architecture, I recommend watching this video

One of the most popular use cases of Nutanix is to run VMware vSphere. How do you backup workloads on VMware vSphere if they are running on Nutanix platform?

Just like any other platform for hosting VMware vSphere,...

Functional IT professionals value technical training. Whether you are new to the industry and looking to start from the basics, someone who has experience in a competing solution and switching to Symantec solution or someone trying to evaluate a solution that is best suited for company business needs, a technical architect is comfortable to make an informed decision if he/she can actually get technical information easily. He/she may not be interested in a sales pitch; the appetite there is really for the true technical capabilities and operations.

Unlike some vendors in the market who hide even product documentation unless you have already bought the product, Symantec had always made it available online. There is nothing to hide from the public when most...
