George Crump recently wrote a post on Byte & Switch on source-side deduplication. I thought an expansion on the topic would be useful given that George did not cover all the facts in his post. Yes, I’m writing from a Symantec perspective, but my intention is to present a balanced and factual argument.
Do you have to switch backup applications for integrateddeduplication? NetBackup integrated its PureDisk deduplication engine into the NetBackup server to give customer the choice about how and where they perform deduplication. As a result, there’s no need to replace the client on your existing machine if you’re already using NetBackup.
Jon Toigo writes a blog call Drunken Data. He recently put out a call for dedupe vendors to answer a few questions. You can read some of the unedited vendor submissions, including one for our own product NetBackup PureDisk. I am happy to post it here if anyone finds it too difficult to read through the blog.
The response are different then what you might read in standard datasheet / collateral material. Indeed, it's the contrast of response where you'll find the silver lining.
Finally, a blurb posted from SearchDataBackup.com, by Dave Rafino "Storage Decisions: Users list must-have data dedupe options" where users sounded off on data dedupe. If you're feeling lazy, I'll net it out for you.
Stephen Bigelow, of SearchDataBackup.com (or TechTarget) posted a brief article entitled "How to Upgrade or Replace Backup Software". Stephen raised some good points which can be summarized as follows - "make sure to invest in a backup platform that supports next generation technologies" such as VMware, encryption, and data deduplication. Needless to say, for larger enterprises or those with heterogeneous environments I would advocate upgrading to the NetBackup Platform to address current and future needs
