On Monday July 7th Symantec announced the release of NetBackup 5230 and 5220 expanded capacity.

While this may seem like another product “speeds and feeds” announcement, it is more than that. I believe there are three (3) reasons why this release is significant:

  • Confirms Symantec’s commitment to NetBackup and NetBackup appliances.

  • Validates Symantec as a leading integrated backup appliance.

  • Delivers investment protection to our customers.

Don’t get me wrong, increasing the capacity is important, but the underlying message of “why this matters” is even more important.

Our Commitment to NetBackup Appliances

I started with Symantec and NetBackup appliances a little more than three (3) years ago. Back then, it seemed the competition was constantly throwing FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) as Symantec was “only a software company”, and “not in appliances for...

Pop Quiz: The Enterprise Backup and Recovery software market is:

  1. Dramatic

  2. Controversial

  3. In the Midst of an Upheaval

  4. All of the Above

Yep. This year the industry analysts are acknowledging the most interesting dynamic that we’ve observed in all of the years that we’ve been in the data protection space. But unfortunately, some publications still missed the mark on a major trend in the evolution of this market space. Here’s why I think so.

Ultimately, all of us in the industry are biased participants – hey, I’m one of them. But the inarguable test for success comes down to customers voting with their wallets. And that measurement is defined by revenue and units, and it is applied to a new, parallel backup market space called Integrated Appliances.

Combining software and hardware into a dedicated function appliance is not a new thing. Fifteen years ago all-in-one small office devices...

Backup is like an insurance policy. You want it for the peace of mind, but you don’t want it to dominate your workday (also, nights and weekends!). You need to protect data on your virtual machines to guard against hardware/storage failures and user errors. You may also have regulatory and compliance requirements to protect data for the longer term.

VMware made virtual machine data protection easy for administrators by introducing vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP). VADP is a set of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) made available by VMware for backup software vendors. These APIs make it possible for backup software vendors to embed the intelligence needed to protect virtual machines by integrating with vSphere. Through these APIs, the backup software can create snapshots of virtual machines and copy those to backup storage.

My previous blog spoke to the concept of an "Agile Data Center," a model that customers tell us represents their future. Most organizations sit in some (or many) parts of it and are searching to move from the circles to the center.

What does it mean to get the right resources to the right users in the right way? Last week at Symantec Vision 2014 in Las Vegas we introduced this concept for the first time, and expanded on it with some hard examples.

Together with Intel, VMware, NetApp, Biomni, Microsoft, as well as some of our own products, we elaborated on the way elastic resources, delivery-as-a-service and IT intelligence can...

Upgrading an enterprise system, or even a personal system, is often filled with mixed emotions. It can be a time of great excitement and anticipation for new features, better performance, or just having something new. On the other hand, there may be anxiety over performing the upgrade itself and how long it may take.

I can relate to this as I am due for a new laptop at the end of May. After three years with the same laptop I am excited for a new one:  faster boot time, longer battery life, and hopefully better overall performance. A new system may even help reduce my coffee consumption. Currently, I start the boot process, enter my login credentials, and I have enough time to walk down the hall to get coffee and return before it finishes booting. On the flip side, I am hesitant to upgrade as I don’t want to be out-of-pocket for an extended period of time. How can I ensure my downtime is limited, and I am up-to-speed as quickly as possible?...

In today’s world, customers expect or even demand ‘instant gratification’ from delivered products and services (thanks, Gmail).  This forces organizations to constantly look or new ways to improve their ability to respond to these demands, while maintaining a competitive edge in the market – in essence, they are always striving toward greater business agility. Forrester defines business agility as “the quality that allows an enterprise to embrace market and operational changes as a matter of routine”.

A common trait across successful businesses is their ability to efficiently adapt to the latest trends and processes that have positive impacts to business performance and revenue growth. Here technology trends play a key role in enabling greater business agility. While people, operational and organizational processes are important factors that determine an...
