In Love With Integrated Backup Appliances

By 2017, the purpose-built backup appliance market is estimated to be $6B in size (based on projections from IDC), essentially the same size as the enterprise backup software market.  The clear emergence of a new parallel market started in 2009 when enterprise backup & recovery software was a $3 billion market.  That same year, EMC outbid NetApp to acquire Data Domain a close Symantec technology partner selling deduplication disk appliances for $2.4 billion (80% the size of the total software market). At that time Symantec had 30% of the backup & recovery SW market and EMC had 12% (according to IDC Software Tracker – Data Protection Segment). The success of Data Domain appliances reflected changes in customer behavior as they made a transition from tape to disk, to simplify backup. As the market leader in...

It's no secret that we held NetBackup 7.6 back longer than we had planned. For more information on Steve Bennett and his Symantec 4.0 initiatives (including the high focus on quality) read the news articles like this one. That extra time for testing unearthed a pretty unique story about our ability to handle really large, cutting-edge environments.

Symantec itself, a $7B global firm with ~20,000 employees, is a solid example of the "enterprise" customer environments that we target with our offerings. We use our own internal teams for beta testing and discovered that one of our internal IT groups has designed a private cloud to automate the deployment of dev/test environments. One of the key messages around NetBackup 7.6 is that large scale Software Defined Data Centers are on the horizon and our customers need to know that they can move in that direction with confidence....

Better Backup for VM Sprawl

The following chart is data from IDC data:

Screen Shot 2014-01-30 at 5.21.46 PM.png

Two things immediately stand out when looking at this data: 1) VM growth is going to continue into the predicted future (not surprising), and 2) physical server presence is constant over the same time frame (also not suprising).

As organizations increase their use of virtualization technology, lower time-to-provision drives ever-faster rates of virtual server growth.  As the number of servers multiplies, the challenge of protecting these systems grows in proportion.

What’s interesting to me is that the battle we find ourselves in today, with a single-solution to protect both physical and virtual vs. separate solutions for physical and virtual will still be raging in the future....

What is “market leadership? There is no shortage of vendors claiming to be #1 in something.  Such a simple question but so often misinterpreted.

Many customers and vendors believe that the vendor placed in the highest and farthest to the right position of the Gartner Magic Quadrant report is the “leader” of that market. But that's only one data point .

MQ2013.png

Another key measurement point is market share. In fact, BusinessDictionary.com defines market leadership this way:

“[A] brand, product, or firm that has the largest percentage of total sales revenue (the market share) of a market.”

Gartner also reports that the world’s economy diverts $4.3B USD every year in their report Market Share: Storage Management Software, Worldwide, 2012, (May 2013). Symantec backup software accounts for 32.2% of the total and...

A third area the NetBackup Appliance 2.6 Release focuses on is improved supportability. Refer to the two previous blogs; NetBackup Appliance 2.6 Release Overview and NetBackup 5230 – 14TB configuration.  In this release*, there are three (3) new features which enable greater supportability: customers having greater control over their system, better visibility of how the system is operating, and expedited troubleshooting and support. Combined, these features enable the NetBackup appliance to deliver greater operational efficiency, reduce risk, and improve SLAs. More importantly, it saves valuable administration time by automating many routine tasks, and streamlining common procedures.

Symantec has added several new and enhanced features to...

The NetBackup 5230 - 14TB configuration is the latest addition to the NetBackup Appliance family and was Generally Available on December 2, 2013.  It is supported by NetBackup software release 7.6 (appliance release 2.6)*.  Refer to blogs NetBackup Appliance 2.6 Release Overview and NetBackup Appliance 2.6 Release:  New Diagnostics Center

NetBackup 5230 – 14 TB configuration is built on the same platform as the 4 TB configuration. In fact, there are only two differences between the configurations. Obviously, capacity is one factor, and product labeling is the other. The capacity difference is the use of larger capacity drives (3 TB versus 1 TB drives) in the same footprint. The product naming on the front still reads Symantec NetBackup 5230...

Let us start our technical deep dive with NetBackup Accelerator for VMware. Most of you already know that NetBackup Accelerator is designed to provide full backups for the cost of performing an incremental backup. In this case cost stands for the backup window, backup storage, client CPU, client memory, client disk I/O, network bandwidth etc. required for running backups. NetBackup Accelerator was first introduced in NetBackup 7.5 for file system workloads and became an instant hit. Answers to frequently asked questions on NetBackup Accelerator for files systems could be found here.

In NetBackup 7.6, backup acceleration comes to both VMware vSphere and VMware vCloud Director environments (more on VMware vCloud Director support in a later blog in this series). NetBackup Accelerator for VMware is a combination of three powerful technologies.

It had been a while since I added something new to this series on Nuts and Bolts in NetBackup for VMware. The dawn of NetBackup 7.6 is here. It is one of the biggest releases in NetBackup for VMware vSphere and vCloud. This release prepares for your journey to Software Defined Data Center. Are you ready? Fasten your seat belts!

First and foremost, let us put some perspective on the adoption of virtualization in data centers. Symantec and VMware have been guiding you in reaping the benefits of virtualization. It is happening in three phases. You are likely to be in one of the three phases in this exciting journey.

  1. IT Production: In this phase, you are looking save on capital expenses through server consolidation for general-purpose workloads. The key advantage here is to pool and abstract hardware resources for optimal utilization. NetBackup prepared...
