This is a question that I frequently get asked by partners around the globe.  Well, there is one really, really important reason why you want to get your own PartnerNet account.   In order to receive credit for completing any of the Symantec Assessment or Authorization exams, you need to log in with your OWN PartnerNet account.  These are the exams that lead to the various accreditations (SSE, SSE+, STS, ASC).

If you sign up to take the exam and complete it, using anyone else's credentials, they will get credit, NOT you.  This can cause a lot of problems, especially if that person has already completed the exam.  In that case, your company will not get the credit for an additional person completing the exam.  The completions are automated and feed directly into the CertTracker application on the back end.  We do not do any manual data entry or cross checking if that person already completed the exam. ...

You may have heard that Symantec is sponsoring Level Platforms Managed Workplace 2011 Road Show, taking place in 19 cities across North America beginning February 8.  But how much do you know about Symantec’s partnership with Level Platforms?

Symantec and Level Platforms have teamed up to develop policy module for the management and monitoring of Backup Exec, Backup Exec System Recovery and Symantec Endpoint Protection in remote installations.  This combination of the Backup Exec product family and Symantec Endpoint Protection the Level Platforms Managed Workplace solution represents a key opportunity for partners and managed service providers.

Security and backup and recovery services are a “can’t fail” category for Managed Services Providers....

I have some exciting news about the Symantec Rewards Program. We’ve extended the Sympoints Backup, Security, and Recovery program through April 1, 2011. This means that partners have additional time to earn more rewards and build up your Sympoints account. Plus, in December we made a couple of significant enhancements to the program by offering:

Lower thresholds on minimum licenses per claim – and - the addition of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0

For SMB resellers, you can earn a 15% reward point bonus on all qualifying sales by completing 4 of the required courses to become an SMB specialist.

The claims deadline for the Backup, Security, and Recovery program is May 16, 2011. Checkout the online catalog at www.sympoints.com to see the vast choices you have to redeem your points for the latest merchandise, exciting travel, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Earning rewards has never...

Much debate has occurred over the priority order of information confidentiality, availability, or integrity.  Which one is more important than the other? It depends. Typical consultative answer right? You cannot blindly say which is more important.  The business situation changes the priorities, albeit minor in altitude.  Not all information is created equal; thus, we cannot blatantly say that it should be treated with the utmost availability, integrity, or confidentiality.

Customer records, intellectual property, financial records, personal identifiable information, patient records, and so forth deserve all three in the infamous triad of confidentiality, integrity, and availability; however, corporate Christmas party logistics, department communication, and the like do not need the same level of protection.  Therefore, it is paramount that organizations understand what is truly of value within the information store of their enterprise. ...

Outsourcing, co-location, leasing, COO / CFO absorption of the CIO role, cloud computing and so on are the topics littered across the landscape of today’s IT world.  Reading an article recently (http://bit.ly/e80vBP) sparked a long running exposed nerve I have endured painfully throughout my career in this industry, IT.  While it is absolutely true that we should not bind ourselves within the boarders of our thought, nor our physical location.  The truth resounds in a deafening roar, “Do not forget the human element!”  People are still a part of this technological world.  Processes certainly support people and are automated by technology; however, this does not take the place of the communion that occurs between people.

Regardless of the business model, remote operations...

Deduplication is certainly a hot topic! I have seen many great discussions about deduplication in many different forums. Many of the discussions center around technical specifications.  Unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon.  Technical specifications address the applicability of a particular product to a range of uses, sometimes broad but more often narrow in focus.  Deduplication has grown out of many different needs in the industry.  The greatest of these is cost reduction.  Cost reduction in storage, backup, network, and protection (lumping information security with data loss prevention and the like).

Deduplication is dictated by the requirements of the organization, technical bottlenecks, and operating situations. Ideally, you would deduplicate at the source (at the client) and at the target (globally). This would provide the best of both worlds in that there...

When you are using the Partner Locator to research or make introductions to Professional Services partners, be sure to leverage the Professional Services pull-down in the Find Partners by Business Need on the Advanced Search tab in the locator.  Here, you can narrow your search for consulting related partners by State, City and even Zipcode.

In addition, several of the consulting partners have more robust, detailed profiles located on the Partner Success site.  This site is a work in progress and we are working on creating a self service option so partners can...
