Hello, we have been very excited by working in the Symantec community, I would like to share some tips for implementations by existing Symantec users of the Biomni Service Catalog solution (www.biomni.com/symantec) for end users and customers wishing to both understand IT service offerings available to them and to raise requests against those services.

Tip1 - Underestimate the amount of time you require for training on Biomni applications! We have found that anyone who can administrate the Symantec tool suite can 'learn' how to administrate biomni very quickly, typically after only a couple of hours clients have been off and building. The entire configuration is carried out through an intuitive UI, so there’s no programming involved and your biomni consultant is always at the end of the phone to help with any questions.

Here's an interesting article in Symantec's online magazine The Confident SMB. It features Symantec partner, Blue Chip Tek and their customer, MobiTV. http://www.symantec.com/business/confident_smb/article.jsp?aid=may10_cover

MobiTV’s end-to-end managed service platform enables the delivery of  100 television and video channels from more than 50 content providers, including NBC, ABC, ESPN Mobile TV, Disney Channel, FOX News, COMEDY CENTRAL and Bravo to its subscribers. The company’s subscriber base has tripled over just the past two years to nine million, and its IT infrastructure was feeling the strain. They needed a solution that was more integrated and would allow them to plug-and-play various features into a common dashboard. So MobiTV worked with Symantec partner Blue Chip Tek, Inc. to implement Altiris Service and Asset Management...

Wow!  We at GreenBytes couldn’t be more excited about the outlook of our new partnership with Symantec.  It has been a whirlwind since we announced our inline dedupe product line in September (GB-X Series) and our certified support for OST has added a new dimension to the conversation.

GreenBytes is not another “Me Too” vendor as it relates to OST.  We have fully implemented Optimized Duplication, providing enhanced replication that is fully DR aware.  And, we are poised and ready for Optimized Synthetic Full Backups when they become available to the world.  We are also very excited about the prospects of BackupExec customers being able to utilize OST.  We are actively developing plugins for BE 2010 and can’t wait to deploy them with our existing and future BE customers.  But, that’s not where the story ends.

GreenBytes provides competitive advantages over previous deduplicating OST appliances....

This Blog Post comes from "View From the Bunker" - a blog about security and availability from some of the folk at Symantec. We will continue to check this blog and share its insights here regularly.

iPad’s domination of the news agenda has provided a golden opportunity for cybercriminals to target consumers hungry for more information on Apple’s new creation.

As soon as the announcement was made, we observed that related search terms had become targets for Blackhat SEO attacks and phishing attacks. People interested in finding out more about the iPad over the internet must be on guard.

The excitement over the iPad has been building for months now, so it’s only to be expected that its announcement would spark a huge spike in search traffic...

A zero-day vulnerability recently identified in Microsoft Internet Explorer was used as an entry point for a coordinated set of cyber attacks that has been carried out on dozens of large enterprises. Please be advised that Symantec is working to keep our partners and customers informed of these cyberattacks known as Hydraq (also known as Aurora, Google Attacks, and the Microsoft IE Vulnerability (advisory number 979352)). The malware behind most of these attacks, "Trojan.Hydraq" appears to have been part of a sophisticated attack pattern designed to steal large amounts of intellectual property. Your customers may have become aware of this event from the heavy media coverage about the attacks on Google.

The underlying vulnerabilities used in this attack are now widely known and likely to be exploited by other cybercriminals even though the Command and Control infrastructure behind this coordinated attack has been taken down.

It is important...

I am sharing this post from my friends at MSP Mentor (www.mspmentor.net). The site's Editor Joe Panettieri posted this advice.

When I picked up my local newspaper this morning, I noticed an article titled “How to Market Yourself As An Expert.” The opinion piece included nine tips. And the tips certainly apply to multiple markets — including managed services. Here’s a look.

Here are the tips…

  1. Teach a class/host a webinar
  2. Write a special report/white paper
  3. Write a column
  4. Write and article
  5. Get third-party endorsements
  6. Write an e-zine or newsletter
  7. Write a book
  8. Participate in social media
  9. Get speaking gigs

Sure, that’s a very basic list. But here’s the key question: How are your writing and communication skills? Every tip, it seems...

Hi,

Thought I'd share this with you all...
I had a server in Africa that was failing backups all the time. Initially it had an HP StorageWorks 1/8 G1 autoloader connected. I tried just about everything to get it working, and was really happy to get 2 working backups through. Backups then failed, and reparing the drive was going to be too costly.
An HP StorageWorks MSL2024 was sent to the site, along with new LTO2 tapes (not backing up much!). It was correctly cabled up, and Backup Exec 11D was upgraded too BEWS 12.5 with SP2 (which has seen my backup environment stabilising greatly!). I was able to inventory the slots, could unlock/lock the drive, and could initialise the device. i would complete about 90% of a tape erase, and it would then fail.
Backups would start out at 10MB/m, and drop down to 3MB/m, before hitting 0 MB/m and eventually failing.
I tried upgrading the service pack again, reinstalling the application...

Bill Robbins, Symantec Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales, spoke Tuesday at the 2009 Raymond James IT Supply Chain Conference in New York City.

"We're focusing on our partners very much driving incremental new business. This is not just a fulfillment mode," he said. "We've also been pushing our services opportunities to partners, as you saw at our recent PartnerEngage, to reduce conflict and make sure our customers know that our channel partners are fully qualified to help them. There is more wood behind the Symantec arrow in driving new opportunities."

He also said, "We're focused on providing a much more holistic solution than a McAfee or other competitors can. Customers are looking to deal with fewer vendors rather than more, and we feel that customers are responding well to our roadmap."
