Wow!  We at GreenBytes couldn’t be more excited about the outlook of our new partnership with Symantec.  It has been a whirlwind since we announced our inline dedupe product line in September (GB-X Series) and our certified support for OST has added a new dimension to the conversation. 

GreenBytes is not another “Me Too” vendor as it relates to OST.  We have fully implemented Optimized Duplication, providing enhanced replication that is fully DR aware.  And, we are poised and ready for Optimized Synthetic Full Backups when they become available to the world.  We are also very excited about the prospects of BackupExec customers being able to utilize OST.  We are actively developing plugins for BE 2010 and can’t wait to deploy them with our existing and future BE customers.  But, that’s not where the story ends.

A zero-day vulnerability recently identified in Microsoft Internet Explorer was used as an entry point for a coordinated set of cyber attacks that has been carried out on dozens of large enterprises. Please be advised that Symantec is working to keep our partners and customers informed of these cyberattacks known as Hydraq (also known as Aurora, Google Attacks, and the Microsoft IE Vulnerability (advisory number 979352)). The malware behind most of these attacks, "Trojan.Hydraq" appears to have been part of a sophisticated attack pattern designed to steal large amounts of intellectual property. Your customers may have become aware of this event from the heavy media coverage about the attacks on Google.
 
The underlying vulnerabilities used in this attack are now widely known and likely to be exploited by other cybercriminals even though the Command and Control infrastructure behind this coordinated attack has been taken down.

Hi,

Thought I'd share this with you all...
I had a server in Africa that was failing backups all the time. Initially it had an HP StorageWorks 1/8 G1 autoloader connected. I tried just about everything to get it working, and was really happy to get 2 working backups through. Backups then failed, and reparing the drive was going to be too costly.
An HP StorageWorks MSL2024 was sent to the site, along with new LTO2 tapes (not backing up much!). It was correctly cabled up, and Backup Exec 11D was upgraded too BEWS 12.5 with SP2 (which has seen my backup environment stabilising greatly!). I was able to inventory the slots, could unlock/lock the drive, and could initialise the device. i would complete about 90% of a tape erase, and it would then fail.
Backups would start out at 10MB/m, and drop down to 3MB/m, before hitting 0 MB/m and eventually failing.
I tried upgrading the service pack again, reinstalling the application...

Bill Robbins, Symantec Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales, spoke Tuesday at the 2009 Raymond James IT Supply Chain Conference in New York City.

 

"We're focusing on our partners very much driving incremental new business. This is not just a fulfillment mode," he said. "We've also been pushing our services opportunities to partners, as you saw at our recent PartnerEngage, to reduce conflict and make sure our customers know that our channel partners are fully qualified to help them. There is more wood behind the Symantec arrow in driving new opportunities."

He also said, "We're focused on providing a much more holistic solution than a McAfee or other competitors can. Customers are looking to deal with fewer vendors rather than more, and we feel that customers are responding well to our roadmap."
