Symantec continues to innovate on all security fronts – including antispam.  Symantec Messaging Gateway 9.5, powered by Brightmail, extends our leading antispam capabilities by offering personalized protection against unwanted email. It’s now possible for companies to refine their definition of unwanted email, and customers beta testing the new handling are impressed with the new abilities to block types of marketing email and newsletters as well as emails containing suspicious URLs, such as shortened URLs where the target has been obfuscated.

Plus, Symantec continues to increase the control organizations have over both incoming and outgoing messages by offering smart integrations with data loss prevention and encryption technologies. ...

Even spammers take a holiday break after all.

Spam made up 81.69% of all messages in December, compared with 84.31% in November. We have been tracking the decline in spam for few months now, and there were several interesting developments in this area.

Some botnets went virtually silent around the Christmas holiday, but the break did not last very long. On January 10, the botnet activity returned and we saw a spike in spam volume. There is also an interesting relationship between the uptick in spam to ‘.ru’ domain URL spam messages. To find out more, click here to download the January 2011 State of Spam & Phishing Report, which highlights the following trends:

The User Centered Design (UCD) team here at Symantec exists to help make customer experiences easier, more efficient and more useful for you.  Right now, we're ramping up several research projects where we are looking for those in security and compliance with a manger, director or CISO role to give us feedback in the form of short user stories.  This should require only a 30-45 minute commitment on the phone to share experiences and points of pain, and this effort is "product agnostic" so as long as you are involved with security, regardless of products used, we'd like to hear from you!

If you are interested, please email Kellie Mecham at kellie_mecham@symantec.com to arrange a date and time for the phone interview.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Best wishes,

Kellie

The monthly State of Spam & Phishing report has been tracking the decline of overall spam in recent months. The chart below shows the global spam volume dropping significantly since August.

An even more significant drop was observed during the Christmas holiday. The chart below shows the global spam volume for the month of December 2010 and first few days of January 2011.

What could have caused such a big drop?  We have some potential answers.  According to MessageLabs, there was a huge reduction in output from the Rustock botnet, which was by far the most dominant spam botnet in 2010.  Since December...

I have a small internet business that I run from my home office.  I need a comprehensive security solution that isn't going to break the bank & be fairly simple for me to operate since I am not an IT person.

This seems like it would be a pretty straightforward request but I have been confused & overwhelmed with the choices available.  I would appreciate any recommendations at this point from actual users.

We could use some advice.  We are an internet marketing company and we get our share of IT questions.  We're not IT people so . . . what would be the best product recommendation for protection against malicious files (trojans, virus, malware, etc.)?  We've probably had better luck with Norton Anti-Virus but would like to know the opinions of others.  Thanks!

Hello All,

IT Analytics (ITA) will now be offered to SEP, Altiris and Protection Suite customers for free via FileConnnect.

There will be no changes from how ITA is currently supported.  GDSS will continue to route all ITA calls to the Altiris support team to be resolved.

Below is some general information and links concerning ITA.

Thank you,

Symantec IT Analytics FAQ

Q1. What is IT Analytics?

IT Analytics enables users to maximize the value of the data that resides within the Altiris and Symantec Endpoint Protection by incorporating multidimensional analysis and robust graphical reporting features. This allows users to explore the databases without advanced knowledge of databases or third-party reporting tools, empowering them to ask and answer their own questions quickly, easily, and effectively. Features include powerful on-the-fly ad-hoc...
