Message Audit Logs (MAL) were introduced into the Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) (known then as the Symantec Brightmail Gateway) to help track messages that are processed by the SMG appliance. When first introduced, MAL was fairly rudimentary and lacked some needed functionality needed to properly track a message. Fast forward several iterations, with each version implementing MAL better and better, and we have the extremely useful tool that now exists.

MAL can be accessed from the Status page and can tell you almost everything you need to know about a message transaction processed by the SMG appliance. This information is related to SMG version 9.5.2-3, but can be applicable to other versions as well.

There are many options available to help you search for message transactions, which are found in the Filter section. The MAL Filter...

Spam, as you've already known, is any form of unsolicited or undesired email messages. An electronic form of junk mail. Taken from the food of the same name due to the common knowledge that people does not want spam (food) on a daily basis.

Back in 1973 (you read that right). There was only Arpanet. Someone was working for a company engaged in computer technolgoes. And as was expected, a lot of PCs slowed down or crashed that day when users tried opening the unknown email with a long To:/Cc: list.

At the time, there are only around 1,000 users and data transfer is measured in baud. Average data transfer is less than 0.2 kbps over analog lines. And someone is sending emails to almost 80% of the...

Even spammers take a holiday break after all.

Spam made up 81.69% of all messages in December, compared with 84.31% in November. We have been tracking the decline in spam for few months now, and there were several interesting developments in this area.

Some botnets went virtually silent around the Christmas holiday, but the break did not last very long. On January 10, the botnet activity returned and we saw a spike in spam volume. There is also an interesting relationship between the uptick in spam to ‘.ru’ domain URL spam messages. To find out more, click here to download the January 2011 State of Spam & Phishing Report, which highlights the following trends:
