The User Centered Design (UCD) team here at Symantec exists to help make customer experiences easier, more efficient and more useful for you.  Right now, we're ramping up several research projects where we are looking for those in security and compliance with a manger, director or CISO role to give us feedback in the form of short user stories.  This should require only a 30-45 minute commitment on the phone to share experiences and points of pain, and this effort is "product agnostic" so as long as you are involved with security, regardless of products used, we'd like to hear from you!

If you are interested, please email Kellie Mecham at to arrange a date and time for the phone interview.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Best wishes,

The monthly State of Spam & Phishing report has been tracking the decline of overall spam in recent months. The chart below shows the global spam volume dropping significantly since August.

An even more significant drop was observed during the Christmas holiday. The chart below shows the global spam volume for the month of December 2010 and first few days of January 2011.

What could have caused such a big drop?  We have some potential answers.  According to MessageLabs, there was a huge reduction in output from the Rustock botnet, which was by far the most dominant spam botnet in 2010.  Since December...

An e-mail storm is a sudden spike of email traffic, often caused by malware (like the recent "Here You Have" virus) and users on large distribution lists replying to all. These storms are not just inconveniences – they pose a challenge to email environments as the huge volume of traffic can actually take down servers.

The internal nature of these storms also requires products that can both filter internal mail and clean up mail stores. Mail Security for Exchange and Domino integrates with their respective email server environments to uniquely provide coverage of internal mail traffic and storage.

The products provide:

1. Outbreak detection: Identify that an active outbreak is occurring because of the volume of traffic generated by the same malicious email

2. Internal mail filtering: Block all internal traffic of the "Here you Have" email using Content Filtering

Saw this come across one of my Google Alerts and wanted to pass it around.  Gartner’s Magic Quadrant is made up of four sections (quadrants):

  • Leaders
    • Score high on ability to execute and completeness of vision
  • Challengers
    • Score high on ability to execute and lower on completeness of vision
  • Visionaries
    • Score lower on the ability to execute and higher on the completeness of vision
  • Niche Players
    • Score lower on both criteria but are new to additions to the Magic Quadrant

For more information see this Wikipedia entry on the Magic Quadrant.

The three reports are:

I've been getting this problem just recently:
SBG Error 10142009.JPG

I've tried searching and this is one of the promising solutions I've found:

Situation: When running reports in Symantec software or Symantec appliances with software 5.0.0-14 or newer, an error message shows. The text reads: "No data is available for the report type and time...
